ELTHAM GOLF CLUB

ELECTION OF OFFICERS. PROPOSAL TO PURCHASE COURSE. The annual meeting of the Eltham Golf Club was held on Monday, Mr. L. T. Quin presiding over a good attendance. The report stated: The club has a membership of 93, comprising 51 men and 42 ladies. Whilst this is a decrease of five compared with the previous year, it must be considered -very satisfactory. The inducement offered to first and second year players continues to be a boon to the club, and many names of these young players now appear among the short handicapped players. Mr. Ritchie was engaged as coach, and although some members availed themselves of the opportunity of taking lessons the number was disappointing and it is a question whether the club is justified in future in engaging a professional. Inter-club matches were played, the club having a share of success. Challenges were received for the Seafield Cup, but the trophy was retained on each-- occasion. The club undertook a successful tournament from which a net profit of £34 resulted. It is hoped that another tournament will be arranged during the

coming season. The thanks ot the club are due to all who donated trophies, especially outsiders who assisted at the tournament.

The condition of the greens and course has been equal to that of previous years, and special thanks are due to the green committee and greenkeeper.

The ladies’ committee held several socials during the season, and these proved very enjoyable. Approximately £l3 was handed over to be used for the improvement of the club house. The club has prospered financially. Commencing the year with a credit balance of £lB 17s 6d the sclub finished the year with cash in hand £BB 7s 2d. After taking off depreciation the assets amounted to £233, and there are no liabilities. The president commented that this had been the first year that the club had come through without arrears of subscriptions. He thanked all members for their assistance by prompt payment. The credit balance was the largest since the inception of the club. The thanks of the club were due to the secretary, Mr. Clemow, for the excellent way he had brought out the balance-sheet. Mr. J. L. Campbell also referred to the successful season and complimented the tournament committee on its good work. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. L. T. Quin; captain, Mr. E. L. _ Abbott; vice-captain, Mr. H. R. Casey; committee, Messrs. J. H. Morton, H. B. Gibson, R. H. Free;; secretary, Mr. F. Clemow; auditor, Mr. F. W. Fallows; honorary solicitor, Mr. A. A. Stewart; handicapper, Mr. H. R. Casey. A report was received from tne special committee set up to go into the question of acquiring new links, and it was proposed to purchase a property, providing the financing could be arranged. A resolution was carried that a levy of 2s 6d per member be made to cover the cost of trophies and that the cost of these be curtailed if possible. The question of engaging a professional was left to the committee. ELTHAM LADIES’ CLUB. At a meeting of the Eltham ladies’ club the following officers were elected: Captain, Mrs. A. J. Quin; vice-captain, Mrs. A. O. Casey; secretary, Mrs. A. A. Stewart; committee, Mesdames L. T. Quin, H. Wills and Miss G. Brooker; handicap manager, Mrs. A. J. Quin. It was decided that match day should be Tuesday and that Saturday players should play on the preceding Saturday. It was resolved to have a fee for all matches except the championships and the Sylvia Bowl. It was decided to

lengthen some of the holes. The resignation of the secretary, Mrs. J. H. Morton, was received with regret and she was accorded a vote of thanks for her services. ELTHAM SWIMMING CLUB. PUPIL PATROLS APPOINTED. In furtherance of the safety first campaign being promoted in schools by the South Taranaki Automobile Association, the service officer (Mr. J. McKee) drove from Hawera to Stratford yesterday and in conjunction with headmasters appointed patrols in the various schools en route. The patrols are pupils, with powers similar to monitors, who are entrusted with ensuring that the children observe every care when on the streets. Every patrol has a badge and the number in each school varies according to the size of the school and its situation with regard to traffic. Six patrols were appointed at the Stratford School and in that case the badges were presented by

the president of the association (Mr. G. A. Carter). ELTHAM THEATRE. NOVELTY MUSICAL COMEDY. “A change is as good as a holiday” is an aphorism that is widely known. Unfortunately holidays are not for many in these difficult times, but all those who visit the Eltham Town Hall on Thursday and Friday nights of this week will be treated to a delightful change. The Eltham Merrymakers are to stage a novelty musical comedy which is refreshing in its treatment, pleasing as a spectacle of colourful ensembles and abounding in amusing situations coupled with entrancing music. The comedy is to be preceded by a short farce entitled “The Bathroom Door,” which will prove a decided mirth-pro-voker. The object of the entertainment is to raise funds for the Mayor of Eltham’s Christmas Cheer Fund to give the children of the unemployed a Christmas treat. Think this over. Remember your own youth and help the Mayor to help the kiddies celebrate the greatest birthday the world knows. Be well advised and book your seat at Carman’s No booking fee.
