AUSTRALIA 216 FOR NINE

ENGLAND ALL OUT FOR 282

WICKET SPLENDID CONDITION

ENGLISH BOWLERS ON TOP

SATURDAY’S CROWD 53,000

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.

Rec. 6.30 p.m. Melbourne, Nov. 20. The Australian team made 216 for nine in the second day of the cricket match against England. The weather was fine and cool and the wicket in splendid condition. The last English wicket fell for 282 before 1 o’clock. The attendance was 53,000 and the receipts were £3600. When the game was resumed this morning with England’s score 238 for eight, Allen opened brightly and hit three fours Off Ironmonger’s second over. He added 20 in ten minutes. Duckworth was content to hang on and batted an extra 25 minutes without scoring. Allen batted splendidly in the later stages. His innings totalled 110 minutes and he hit seven boundaries. Nash showed better pace. Australia commenced at 1 o’clock, runs coming slowly. Soon after lunch Woodfull received a severe blow on the chest from Larwood, who was making the ball fly. Woodfull was in for 71 minutes. Bradman made remarkably clever pulls off Bowes’ bumpers. Bradman was too reckless at times, he both stealing runs wherein he had several narrow escapes and pulling off-balls. He lost his wicket in attempting such a hit. He batted 46 minutes and hit four boundaries. O’Brien was stolid, but neat. He batted 158 minutes and hit one four. The three wickets fell for 131. Bowes was then bowling very accurately and Larwood was maintaining a good pace. Lee gave a bright display for 36 minutes in which he hit two fours, but the bowlers were definitely on top throughout. Larwood bowled 13 overs and Bowes 15, of which two were maidens. Allen did not bowl owing to a slight strain. Scores at stumps were:— ENGLAND.
