BEAUTIFYING THE TOWN
PLEA MADE BY THE MAYOR WORK DONE BY THE COUNCIL. WASTE CORNERS MADE BEAUTIFUL. A plea for an effort by citizens towards making New Plymouth a town of gardens more than it is was made by the Mayor, Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths, at the opening of the Fitz Toy -spring flower show on Saturday. He asked that people follow the lead given by the civic authorities. “A flower show at all times has a great fascination for me,” .said the Mayor.. “I do not think anybody can be associated with flowers and gardens without being the better for it.” Flowers carried a message of hope, he continued. The Seed was planted and eventually, after long weeks of waiting, the fruits were visible. Especially was such a message needed at the present time. The Borough Council had endeavdured to set an example in the beautification of the town, Mr. Griffiths said. Some, of' them would remember the barren piece of land by the Cenotaph. It was now a place of beauty, admired by visitors and townspeople alike. Streets were being beautified and waste corners planted. “I believe in a few years’ time,” prophesied the Mayor, “there will be a very definite improvement in the present beauty of New Plymouth.” There was growing even now an interest in horticluture among the younger people of the town; especially was the Girls’ High School, amid its beautiful surroundings at “Scotlands,” an influence in this direction. “I hope,” said Mr. Griffiths, “that the civic authorities in the work of the beautifying committee have set an example in the cultivation of gardens and the culture of flowers that will be followed increasingly, by the people of the town.” >
