ROWING AT NEW PLYMOUTH

RACES FOR HOFFMAN CUP. Owing to the rough water on the New Plymouth harbour in recent week-ends the Hoffmann Cup had to be rowed in heats during the last two weeks in the evenings. The results are:— First heat: L. Hill (str.), H. Hughes (3), L. Rutherford (2), L. Erb (bow) beat R. Roper (str.), H. Billing (3), C, Burgess (2), Stevens (bow). Roper, setting a faster stroke, took the lead from the start and was three-quarters of a length in front at the end of the wharf. The crew, however, tired badly against a stiff breeze and Hill stroked his crew home steadily to win by a length and a-half. Second heat: L. Frewin (str.), M. Keenan (3), N. Way (2), B. Barlow (bow) beat T. Bellringer (str.), S. Billing (3), J. Scoble (2), R. Rosser (bow). This proved a good race. Frewin came away at the start but Bellringer’s crew was rowing well and was level at the end of the wharf. The No. 3 man had trouble with his seat and Frewin went ahead to win by half a length. Semi-final: Hill drew the bye. Frewin’s crew beat T. Bellringer (str.), S. Billing (3), D. Lobb (2), A. Withers (bow). Frewin took the lead from a good start and maintained it to win by a length and a-half. In the final Frewin’s crew got the better of the start and using a snappier stroke increased tire lead to cross the line two lengths in front of Hill’s crew. This is the fifth time out of seven races

that L. Frewin has been in a Winning Hoffmann Cup crew. There are two trial crews picked for the New Year’s Day regatta, and training operations are in full swing, and with the keenness displayed by both new and old members the club should have quite a few trophies in the shed by the end of the season.
