WATERSIDERS ADAMANT
REFUSE CALL TO LOAD MEAT
QUOTA FOR NORFOLK UNTOUCHED
SHIP TO SAIL THIS AFTERNOON.
A call for waterside labour to load frozen meat into the Federal steamer Norfolk at New Plymouth was made yesterday morning, but there was no response from the watersiders. The Norfolk completed her loading of dairy produce at New Plymouth on Tuesday last and has been lying idle ever since. She will sail for Wanganui this afternoon.
Shortly before 8 o’clock yesterday morning watersiders were standing about the place of engagement awaiting the call for labour to work the Hauraki, which arrived in port on Sunday with 600 tons of Pacific Coast cargo for discharge. At about three minutes to 8 there was a call “All inside,” and the men all entered the watersiders’ hall and the doors were closed. What discussion there!- was was sharp and to the point, and it was apparently decided to adhere to the former resolution not to work the meat.
When the chief stevedore called for labour to handle meat on the Norfolk the men all turned and commenced to walk away. It being evident that, no labour could be obtained for this cargo, the call was immediately altered to one for labour to discharge cargo from the Hauraki. The men then returned to the place of engagement and laboiir was engaged for that vessel without any hitch.
