At the meeting at Stratford convened V ■the Mayor on Tuesday evening to discuss arrangements for the celebration at Stratford of the opening of the railway line on November 7, Mr. P.tSkoglund said he would like to see a reproduction of the ceremony of turning the first sod, with the participants wearing the clothing of the time. He suggested a procession down I|roadway, in the style of 30 years ago. A tree could be planted, he said, to Commemorate the occasion. “The motorist, besides paying unemployment tax, land tax, income tax and rates, has to pay petrol tax, tyre tax and license fees, so that he is doubly taxed,” stated Mr. W. G. at the annual- meeting of the Stratford branch of the S.T.A.A. on Tuesday night. “It appears, to me,” said the Mayor, Mr. P. Thomson, at the public meeting called on Tuesday evening to discuss arrangements ' for. suitable celebration of the opening of the railway, “that many people think November 7 should be a red letter day for shopping at Stratford. That ia not so.. DISEASES OF STOCK. LECTURE AT ELTHAM. The Eltham branch of the Farmers’ Union heard a very instructive address on the common ailments of stock at the monthly meeting. The lecture was given.by Mr. H. R. Denize on Tuesday night, when there was an excellent attendance. Mr. Denize made special reference to •mineral feeding and the proper management of farm animals, and at the conclusion of a lengthy address he answered several questions relating to special aspects of stock diseases. The information given was valuable and •was appreciated by members, who gave Mr. Denize a vote of thanks. At the next meeting Mr. J. M. Smith • will speak on pasture management. Supper was afterwards served by the ladies. STRATFORD LADIES’ GOLF CLUB. OCTOBER MEDAL MATCH DRAW. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Eltham' troop of Frontiersmen has decided to help the Eltham Plunket Society financially by sharing the pro-., ceeds of the dance to be held in the Eltham Town Hall next Monday. A meeting was held on Tuesday of the committees of the respective organisations to arrange details, and it was decided that the ladies of the Plunket Society would undertake the serving of supper and attend to decorating. A good orchestra will play old-time music. Permits for trotting events for the Second day of the show have been granted the Stratford A. and P. Association and approved by the Minister of Internal Affairs. There will be two taile and a-half open races in saddle (and as the oval at the showgrounds has been enlarged more interest than usual will attach to the events.
