OPUNAKE GENERAL NEWS

A meeting to form a troop of the Queen Alexandra Mounted Rifles was held in Opunake on Wednesday. The meeting was addressed by the adjutant, Lieut. Henry, and Staff-Sergeant Major Bell. Major Smart and Lieut. Hastie were also present. The meeting decided to form a troop in Opunake with the requisite number, 29 recruits. A meeting of unemployed at Opunake on Friday decided to form a branch of the workers’ union. The following officials were appointed: President, Mr. A. Hinch; vice-president, Mr. J. Mackenzie; secretary, Mr. R. Baker; committee, Messrs. C. Dudley, J. Short, W. Sonreneen, S. Webb and W. Hohaia (representative of the Maori unemployed).

Mr. J. A. Brailsford lectured on the present crisis in New Zealand in the town hall on Friday evening. The attendance, was not large. A committee was set up with the object of forming a student class in Opunake. A successful euchre party was held in the Ihaia schoolroom on Friday in aid of Mr. A. Baylis’ candidature at the forthcoming Anglican carnival. A pleasant evening was spent and the prizes were awarded to Mrs. A. Gadsby and Mr. W. Wan. Supper was Served by the ladies.
