SCENE IN PARLIAMENT

QUESTION ON UNEMPLOYMENT. MEMBER ORDERED OUT OF HOUSE. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Belfast, Sept. 30. A remarkable scene occurred in the Northern Ireland House of Commons today when Mr. Beattie, a Labour member, complained that the Speaker had unprecedentedly refused a motion in which Mr. Beattie emphasised- the plight of the unemployed. The Speaker said he had declined the motion because he could not introduce an order paper on prorogation day. Mr. Beattie thereupon advanced to the front of the Speaker’s chair and shouted: “I refuse to sit in a House where there is such ‘hypocrisy while thousands are starving.”

He seized the Mace and threw it to the floor. The sergeant-at-arms replaced it, but Mr. Beattie again flung it to the floor, shouting: “I won’t allow' the question to be dismissed in this way.”

The Speaker ordered Mr. Beattie to leave the House and he left, saying that he would withdraw under strong protest.
