AUSTRALIAN WHEAT DUE
VESSEL FOR NEW PLYMOUTH
FIRST UNDER GOVERNMENT PLAN-
I SHORTAGE OF SOUTHERN SUPPLY.
The first shipment of wheat purchased by the New Government to meet th© shortage by the lack of supplies from the Soutn Island will reach New Plymouth by the steamer Kalingo, which is due at JN Plymouth from Melbourne direct next Wednesday. The importation will mean , a saving of about fid a bushel to buyers and, what is considered’of porta-nee, the wheat will be of the finest quality. . The Government’s action was in response to agitation from consumers when supplies from the south were not sufficient to meet the demand. The Gov eminent decided about six weeks ago to buy a certain quantity of wheat in Australia and sell it to the trade at a profit, a condition to be that the wheat be used solely for fowl feed purposes and not for milling, though it is of the finest milling quality. The is bein" shipped to four North Island ports, New Plymouth, Auckland, Wellington and Napier, and distributed in th© districts served by those ports. There will probably be a further shipment in December which should supply sufficient stocks until the new harvest is available. . , . The amount for New Plymouth in the Kalingo will be 319 tons, qr nearly 12,000 bushels. Th© charge made to wholesalers at the breakwater will ba 5s 3d a bushel, which will enable the wheat to be sold at about fid less than -the present price, a saving altogether of about f3OO.
