GOOD SWIMMING SEASON

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB REPORTS. SUCCESS IN EVERY BRANCH. Th© past season had: been the most successful enjoyed for many years, enthusiasm being marked in all branches of the eport, swimming, life-saving and. water polo, in which the club had taken, part, states the report of the New Ply-., mouth Swimming and Old Boys’ Surf Club to be presented-at the annual meeting to-night. The life-saving teams were both very successful. The senior team, M. Smale (captain), H. S. Weston (coach), E. J. Insull, H. J. Anthony, R. Perkins, C. Allen, JI. Neville and H. Watkins, visited Wanganui for the West Coast (Nd.) championships, winning the' Hackshaw Searle championship shield and the Williams March Past Cup. The team also won the Tabor Shield Taranaki championship at Opunake and the Victuallers Cup at Waitara. The junior team, L. B. Rea (captain), R. Gayton, L. Petty, H. Mackay, I. Des Forges, J. Hetherington and H. Blackmore, won the Taranaki junior pennant championship for the first time for several years. The club’s success was''largely due to the untiring and expert work of Mr. H. S. Weston. The spirit shown by the teams in all competitions had been very sportsmanlike. • r ■ . The club had had a successful, water polo season too, the members responsible for this being Messrs. K. J. Staunton and N. Lealand. The senior team won the Dalgleish Cup for the. Taranaki championship and the juniors had won a similar honour by retaining the Garth Gup. Mr. V. Garth had-recently donated a cup to the club to be competed for by teams of girls. It was desired to place on record appreciation of Mr. Garth’s continued support. The club had last season held a water polo tournament for the first time and the club teams had won both senior and junior grades after some excellent competition. . , The arrangement of the Dalgleish and Garth Cup competitions had caused the committee some difficulty and eventuallv a divisional scheme had been adopted. The views of other clubs on the matter would be welcomed but at the earn© time the New Plymouth club did not feel disposed to hand over control, as had been suggested, to the Taranaki centre. 1 , . The annual carnivalwas held on February 13 when in view of the annoyance to the public and inconvenience to the officials, a'separate charge had been reverted to for event entered. The move had been justified. The programme included both polo finals, the Grey Cup Taranaki championship relay race, won by Opunake, and the Taranaki half mile championship, won by H. St. George (Fitzroy club). The club had been well represented at other carnivals, including one at Opunake. The Taranaki centre and the clubs and schools under its control had again conducted “learn to swim” week, New Plymouth members assisting therein.. The Hackshaw Searle Shield competition at Wanganui was made the occasion of a club outing. The Gonville club had held a carnival and entertained the New Plymouth members well. It was hoped to repeat the visit this year. Aggregate competitions had been well supported at regular club nights except in the ladies’ section. The winner* were: Girls, Miss B. Taylor; boys, D. Gay ton; intermediate girls, Miss J. Pepperell; intermediate boys, J. Ryan; ladies, Miss N. Christoffel; men, R. Perkins. Mr. N. Lealand had donated a trophy. The club championships were won a* follow: Girls, M. Fletcher; boys, A. Blair; intermediate girls, Mies T. Cann; intermediate boys, J. Ryan and B. Meredith (equal); ladies, Misses B. Gayton and N. Christoffel (equal); men, R. A. Shaw. Administration had been in efficient hands and the committee had been the most active for many years, the secretary, Mr. L. B. Rea, and the treasurer, Mr. C. Allen, being outstanding. The club had been incorporated during the season. The control of the Flannagan Cup, Taranaki open-water championship race, had been handed over to a Taranaki centre committee.

The combined clubs committee, a ‘‘clearing house” for all ideas, functioned so well that £3O was raised for the Borough Council’s baths improvement. As a result of this practical demonstration of keenness the council had undertaken the work, expecting the clubs to repay £5O in two years. The membership for 1931-32 had been 144, an increase of 64 over the previous season. The number comprised, men 28, ladies 14, intermediates 16, juniors 86. The large junior membership served to encourage the club in its policy of noHjohing’, and it was to be hoped' that the club would continue with that as its main aim., • The club’s social activities had been confined to the dance after the annual carnival and a re-union smoke concert. Thanks were expressed to all who bad assisted the club.
