•RATE OF £200,000 YEARLY.” MAJOR WORKS IMPOSSIBLE. “It is estimated, that the highways of the Dominion, are deteriorating at the rate of £200,000 a year,” said Mr. M. H. Wynyard, motorists’ representative on the Main Highways Board, at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Automobile Association on Wednesday evening, when advice was received from the Main Highways Board that it was not in a position to carry out metalling work . on the Gisborne-Wairoa,, via Hangaroa, main highway. It was absolutely impossible to contemplate any work such as that on the Gisborne-Wairoa Road or on the Great South Road between Papakura and Mercer, unless the board was assured that its finances would not again be diverted, Mr. Wynyard added. “Our roads are going back, and we want all the money we can get for urgent works,” said the president, Mr. A. Grayson. It was agreed to write to the North Island Motor Union requesting it to urge on tho Cabinet the necessity of leaving the Highways Board’s funds Intact in future.
