PLAY NEARING PRODUCTION.

AMATEURS’ “GIPSY LOVE.” The ' Hawera ; Amateur Operatic Society’s production' “Gipsy Love” is now taking’ form, and with the arrival of- the producer, Mr. Harrison Cook, yesterday everything- is -in-readiness for the-finishing touches to be applied during the next three weeks. The members of the company- are already word perfect. • ■ ■

Work so far has been mainly on the musical portion of the play under the supervision of Mr. H. C. A. Fox, musical director,'with Mrs. R; A.-Graham at the piano. The cast of principals, the best the society has'ever had, has been doing good work, wliile .the chorus : does not contain, one “passenger.” It often happens that in the chorus members are selected for looks only,, but everyone in the “Gipsy. Love” ensemble has a voice. A/ full operatic orchestra has been- arranged. .

“Gipsy Love” is a musical play. . The music is by Franz Lehar, of “Merry V. idow” fame, and the lyrics by Adrian Knox. It. sh-ould not be confused with “Gipsy' Blood,” a musical sound film. Only one amateur society, Hamilton, has presented it in Nejv Zealand, and it proved most successful then. The scenery is being brought from Sydney, whence' the costumes will also come. The latter will be made by the firm that supplies J. C. Williamson, Ltd. The ballets are being arranged by Miss Stock.

Half of the proceeds are to be devoted to unemployment relief.

BRIGHT BRITISH COMEDY.

“MONEY FOR NOTHING” TO-NIGHT.

In “Money for Nothing,” to be shown finally to-night at the Hawera Opera House, Miss Betty Stockfeld displays a variety of creations eminently suited to the Cote. d’Azur. • She makes her first appearance in a delightful ankje-length frock of-creamy-lace with a picture hat and parasol to match', the combined effect of which completely bowls over Seymour .licks, who as Jerry Cheddar, a gambler 7 with more system than capital, instantly falls in Jove with her. Then follows a series of hilarious, incidents with Seymour Hicks escaping from the most embarrassing situations by the skin of his* teeth. The fun never once flags until the- climax is reached. The. supports, include the Bobby Jones, golf film dealing with- the spoon.
