GENERAL ITEMS.

On information submitted by L. Hunt, Hawera borough inspector, Denis Badcock and Laurence Edwards were each convicted and fined 10s., with costs 10s,, by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in, the Hawera Court yesterday, for riding cycles which did not have the rear mudguards and stays painted white. Edwards was also convicted and ordered to pay costs for riding without a light. On a similar charge Robert S. Wright was fined 10s. with costs 10s.

For defaulting in payments of instalments of the annual levy and general unemployment levy, Magan Naran, Edward William Cowling and James Boyd came before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Hawera Court yesterday. Naran and Boyd were convicted and each was ordered to pay 10s. costs, while Cowling was fined £l, with costs 18s. 6d.

Shingle has been placed on the bend below Lillecrap’s corner on the South Road about a mile south of Hawera. Two cars have recently gone over the bank at this point and skids have been frequent. For allowing cattle to wander at large on the roads at Ohawe, Emily Hayward was yesterday convicted and fined £l, with costs £1 os. 6d., by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Hawera Court. The Normanby tug-of-war last night resulted in a win for Manaia Road A with Manaia Fire Brigade second. There were eight teams competing. Details, together with particulars of a lazy stick competition, will appear to-morrow. A motor-car, believed to have been stolen from a southern district, was taken into possession yesterday on Tawhiti Road by the Hawera police. Two cars with numbers corresponding to two announced over the radio as stolen were observed by a local resident, who telephoned to the police. By the time a constable reached the spot only one car was left—with an empty petrol tank. Samuel Burns, an itinerant trader, was convicted and ordered to pay £1 ss. 6d. costs in the Hawera Court yesterday for selling clothing without holding the necessary license. It was stated, that Burns had since taken out a license. Prizewinners at the Manaia Catholic euchre party on Monday were Mrs. Woolridge 1, Mrs. J. O’Dea 2, Mr. J. Anderson 1, Mr. H. McKay 2. Mr. C.
