The cricketer F. A. Brown, though chosen for the Australian tour principally as a bowler, made a hurricane 212 for Surrey against Middlesex at the Oval in 165 minutes, recalling Jessop at his fiercest. 'Brown broke two bats and hit the baft eeven times out of the Oval. He scored 15 fours. M. R. Jardine's 126 for Surrey against Middlesex was faultless and occupied 190 minutes. H. SutcliffelB2 in. 250 minutes for Yorkshire against Derbyshire synchronised with the Yorkshire committee voting him 400. guineas in recogniation of 100 centuries in firstclass cricket. L. Ames, with 133, took 180 minutes for Kent against Sussex an., scored his fifth century of the season. M. Tate (Sussex) was 'bowling in fine form against Kent. H. Larwood (Notts) and 'W. Voce (Notts) were also effective against Lancashire. V. Jupp (Northants) completed the double of 100 wickets and 1000. runs for the ninth season, beating W. G. Grace's previous amateur record of eight ■seasons. Hendren’s century brought him equal to Mead's 130 centuries. They are thus next to Hobbs on the centuries list. The county championship leaders are: Yorkshire 225 points, Sussex 206, Kent 200, Notts 190 and Surrey 168. Results of county matches are:—r Middlesex v. Surrey: Middlesex in the first innings made 141 (Parker four wickets for 36) and in the second made 455 (Sims 103, Hendren 145; Brown fave for 81). Surrey in the first innings lost, nine wickets for 540 and declared (Hobbs 92, Jardine 126, Brown 212) and in the second lost four for 57. Surrey won by six wickets. Essex v. Somerset: Essex in the first innings made 303 and in the second 131 (White five wickets for -37). Somerset in tho first innings made 266 and the second lost nine wickets for 172. Somerset won by one wicket. Derbyshire v. Yorkshire: Derbyshire in the first innings made 78, (Verity six wickets for 32) and in ithe second 249 (Worthington 102; Verity five wickets for 37). Yorkshire in the first innings lost seven wickets for 416 and declared (Leyland 113, Sutcliffe 182). Yorkshire won by an innings and 89 runs. Northants v. Hampshire: Northants in the first innings made 253 (Jupp 90) and in the second 251. Hampshire in the first innings made 217 and in the second 174 (Jupp seven wickets for 69). Northants won by 113 runs. Glamorganshire v. Worcestershire: Glamorgan in the first innings made 131 and in the second 397 (Dyson 103, Every 116). Worcestershire in the first innings made 266 and in the second lost eight wickets for 165. Worcester won on the first innings. Notts v. Lancashire: Notts in the first innings made 232 (Sibbles five wickets for 49) and in the second lost eight wickets for 254 and declared. Lancashire in the first innings made. 221 (Watson 92; Voce six wickets for 5'7) and in the second 132 (Larwood five wickets for 42). Notts won by 124 runs. 'Sussex v. Kent: Sussex in the first innings made 284 (Watt five wickets for 90) and in the second lost seven wickets for 363 and declared (J. Langridge 104, H. Parks 149 not out). Kent in the first innings made 282 (Ames 133; Tate six wickets for 9S) and in the second lost five wickets for 241. Sussex won on the first innings.

Warwickshire v. Leicestershire; Warwickshire in the first innings made 250 (Kilner 104 not out) and in the second lost four for 306 (Croom 103, Wyatt 131). Leicestershire in the first innings made 379 (Jarrett eight wickets for 187). Leicestershire won on the first innings. - All-India, which made 390 in, the second innings, beat Gloucestershire by 50 runs. Gloucestershire, >vhich made 230 in the first innings, in the second made 341 (Dacre 95).
