By Telegraph.-r Press Asioelation. Rotorua, Last Night. John Steven Maskery, Hori Mau and Michael John Hefferen appeared tjefora Mr, S. L. Pater gon, S.M., to-day charged with breaches of the Gaining Act. Hefferen was fined £lO on a charge of carrying on the 'business of a bookmaker. A second charge of conducting a gamipg house was dismissed. Mau was charged with aiding to conduct a gaming house and pleaded not <niilty, electing to take the case to * jury, but on a second summary charge of permitting premises to be used as * gaming houfio ho was fined £lOO. The police stated that Mau had four previa ous convictions. Hefferbn was fined £2O for carrying op th® business of a bookmaker apd #5 on a second charge of laying totalisatoc Odds. Maskery was called as a police witness against Mau, but owing to his refusal to answer questions he was ordered to be treated as hostile and warned of the consequences of perjury. All the charges were the result of • police raid on the day of the Wellington races, July 16.
