PERMITS FOR RACING

METHODS OF ALLOCATION. :• STRATFORD CLUB’S PROTEST. .’ “That the New Zealand Racing Con' fererice be advised that in the opinion ef this meeting of the Stratford Racing Club the suggested method, of dealing with unused permits, as outlined by the Conference at the recent annual meeting is most unsatisfactory, and if carried into effect will prevent certain' progressive clubs-whose claims have previously been strongly recommended from obtaining ,an additional permit.”. This resolution was carried at the annual meeting of the Stratford club last night. In moving the motion the president, Mr. D. J. Malone, said that supposing a club in a certain district failed to use a permit", the position would be that the lapsed permit would not be allocated outside the district in which it had lapsed/ If that were allowed to go on without protest there would be no chance oi any club in Taranaki securing further permits except by an Act of Parliament, and that was unlikely. It was oaid, he continued, that ..there was too much racing in New Zealand, and though the accusation might be right in some eases it did not apply to .Taranaki, The fact that some.clubs could not make a success of their meetings indicated that tli® public did not desire those days of pacing. . . ''The stress of the times is bringing home to people the fact that the. allocation of permits-has not been in the best interests of racing,” Mr. g. Pitt said, “It i» decidedly unfair that a permit should have to be re-allocated in the province in which it has lapsed, lam sure there -will bo extra days available and the Stratford club is certainly entitled to * further permit.” In seeking further racing the Stratford club could claim that it was holding successful meetings which received the .whole-hearted support of the public, said Mr, J, B. Richards. If the conference -Would not give heed to the resolution the matter could be taken further as it was not the conference but the Minister who finally granted the permits. If a permit were to lapse in a certain district it was obvious that it was not wanted in that district, said Mr. A. Coleman, Taranaki had only 11 days of racing a year as compared with 23 io 30 in Hawke’s Bay, and Taranaki’s case for extra days was pre-eminent.
