OHINE ROAD DEVIATION. MONTH’S • MAINTENANCE WORK. The' Patea County Council met yesterday, Mr. W. G. Belton presiding. There were also present Crs. W. H. Watkins, C. E Johnston, W. Back, J. Peat, D. Hurley, R. G. Scown, R. J. Watt and J. Lupton. Rates for the coming year were confirmed as follow: Kapora riding l|d., Moumahaki fd., Waverley 5-Bd., Otoia East and West 3d. - Messrs. C. and G. Broughton again waited on the council regarding a deviation on Chine Road. It was decided to authorise the work requested on condition that Messrs. Broughton supply the labour, payment-for which will be. credited io their rate account. Cr. Hurley reported on his inspection of Maben Road and it was decided to employ a man for three days on the clearing of Ball Road track. The engineer (Mr. L. F. Row) reported that in the Moumahaki riding several sharp bends on the Mangawhio Road were being widened and sections of the metalled portion of the road were being dressed with stone ehips. Sections of the Upper Kaharoa Road, in Otoia East riding, had been sanded. The clay shoulders on several sections of Ball Highway, in Otoia West riding, had been built up. The Patea River bridge was being overhauled, decayed timber removed and tar and sand applied where required. It was proposed to paint the handrails and renew unsound deck planks at an early date. The top corner of the Manawapou Hill was being straightened and other improvements carried out by relief labour. The earth shoulders along the whole length of the main road were now in fair condition. PATEA UNEMPLOYMENT. POSITION CONSIDERABLY BETTER. As anticipated at the last meeting of the Patea Local Unemployment Committee, the position in that centre has improved considerably, the number of registered unemployed being depleted by the renewal of seasonal industry. Mr. F. Ramsbottom presided over yesterday’s meeting of the committee, and there were also present Messrs. A. T. Christensen, C. R. Honeyfield, H. A. Green, D. Hurley, A. R. Moore, L. F. Row, L. Austin, F- Naismith, E. F. Hemingway, W. G. Belton and A. J. Campbell.. ' ■Routine business occupied the attention of the members, who expressed satisfaction regarding the decrease in the numbers. KOHI DAIRY COMPANY. SUPPLIERS’ ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of shareholders of the Kohi Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, was held at Waverley yesterday, Mr. C. Oliver presiding over an attendance of about 15. Th 6 report and balance-sheet, as already published, were adopted. A total payment for the season of 11.534 d per lb.' of butter-fat was recorded, another Id being paid at the meeting. The question of installing a back-in stage at the factory was left to the directors. It was considered that the matter was one for the end of the season, and questions of finance as well as those of economy, convenience and installation had to be carefully investigated. It was decided that future annual meetings should be held at Kohi instead. of Waverley, The meeting considering- that larger attendances would result. Messrs. T. P. Magon and E. L. Gulliver were elected to the directorate, Messrs. E; V. Soland and W. L. Oliver, the retiring members, being defeated in the poll. The directors’ fees were fixed at the same figure os previously. Messrs. Veitch and Clarke were reappointed auditors. MANUTAHI DISTRICT NEWS. ■SOCIAL CLUB’S EVENING. There was another good attendance at the Manutahi Social Club’s evening on Monday. A programme pf games and competitions was conducted until 9 p.m., when a play entitled “Five Birds In a Cage,” by Gertrude Jennings, was read by a cast consisting of Mrs. D. M. Jillett as the Duchess of Wiltshire, Mr. R. O. iSchwass as Lord Perth, Miss E. Tapp as Nellie, Mr. E. Clarke as Bert Wilson, and Mr. D. M. Jillett as the liftman. Next week will bring this series of evenings to a close. It has been decided to present as varied a programme as possible, including another play-reading. The Manutahi School children suffered defeat at football and basketball in the first round at the Patea tournament. Miss A. Tapp, Okato, visited Manutahi recently. Mrs. W. Walker is visiting her aunt, Miss Campbell. Mr. V. Paul, Wellington, was recently the guest of his sister, Mrs. E. Harvie. BOXING TOURNAMENT. „ The intention of the Hawera Boxing Association to hold another tournament in the football gymnasium, Hawera, on Monday evening next will bq welcomed by all lovers of boxing. Those who witnessed the last tournament were unanimous in their praise of the fine display and the management promises that next Monday’s feature will eclipse the previous effort. Ten spectacular bouts have been planned, and with such names as Findlay, Hutchens, Jarvis, Thomas, Loveridge, A. Gordon, Robson, K. Reid, J. Reid and Brosnan appearing on the schedule of matchings supporters are assured of an evening’s entertainment of outstanding merit. A special attraction will be an exhibition bout between Tommy Donovan and Bert Turner, 1931 runner-up to Purdie for the New Zealand championship. The redoubtable Tommy is as versatile and clever as ever and in Bert Turner he will meet a sparring partner of very high standard. The price of admission will be popular and every seat is a ringside one in the specially lighted stadium. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS . The Maori Rugby match between Ngaruahine and Waikanae to have been played at Manaia to-day has been postponed till next week on account'of the southern play-off. Jo consider providing for the families of unemployed relief workers and other necessitous cases an urgent public meeting will be held to-night in the Winter Show Buildings, Hawera, at 8 o’clock. Excellent entertainment is assured for the residents of Oeo to-night, when an Eltham concert party, including Messrs Sam Carson, Fred Silver, Pat Gavigan, Mrs. McCook, Mr. Dick Silver and Miss Gwen Silver will give items. There will also be an old-time dance, and a free bus will run from Opunake.

ENTERTAINMENT AT PATEA. ♦ - BAND FUNDS BENEFIT. A . musical entertainment was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Antoni Bonetti and ’party for large and appreciative Patea audience on Monday. The concert was. arranged to assist the finances of the Patea Municipal Band, an act of generosity that was praised by the Mayor- (Mr. F. Ramsbottom), . Who voiced Patea’s appreciation by leading hearty cheers. The programme wa.> varied with instrumental, elocutionary and vocal numbers, the audience being treated to a comprehensive range of- popular songs and dances. The steel guitar duet by

the Misses B. Hunger and M. Knowles, both Patea players, drew rounds of applause. Both performers were newcomers to Patea concert platforms, Miss Knowles played an instrument made at Patea by Mr. Murray Armour. Mrs. A. Bonetti and Miss P. Ekdahl were accompanists., GENERAL ITEMS. There will be music, a folk dance by the girls, an exhibition of their handcrafts and afternoon tea. The club, which now has a membership of 30,■ is conducted op the lines of the Y.W.C.A. and Giri Guides, and is fulfilling a very worthy destiny in the Waverley district.
