RED CROSS SOCIETY
ACTIVITIES IN NEW PLYMOUTH.
REVIEW OF THE PAST MONTH. The past activities of the New Plymouth brand! of the Red Cross Society were reviewed at the last meeting of the branch. Captain Hartnell presided over a good attendance. Sister Corkill reported that the senior homo nursing class had. concluded and that Dr. H. P. Gray and Mesdames Southam and Hosking had conducted the examinations. Ten members sat for and passed their examination, the following being the list of successful candidates; B&A to medallion, Miss M. Roch; intermediate, Mis Jes V. Ferguson, E. Young, A. Wilson; elementary, Miss L. Armistead, Mcsdames L. Davis, D. Hughes, Misses J. Harkness, J. Hunter and Y. Richmond. The other classes at present in progress were nearing completion. The Taranaki team for the Jellicoe Shield competition sat for this event at the Red Cross rooms on July 30. The sewing club of the detachment had met weekly and had supplied a number of necessitous families with clothing. A visit was paid to the Inglewood branch of the Women’s Institute during the month and a talk given on first aid treatments. Visits had been paid to s ’the Waitara, Okoke and Mt. Messenger schools and first aid classes had been held there. A junior Red Cross Circle had been formed at the Okoke school, and this promised to be a very enthusiastic one. The Westown Circle, from the proceeds of two excellent concerts recently, had paid the dental clinic fee of a number of children who could not otherwise receive attention, and also gave a t donation of 10s Id to the society for relief work. Three schools were visited with the school medical officer for the annual medical examination. Five other* schools were visited in connection with various ailments, and a number of children were examined by special request of parent or teacher. Work in connection with the prevalence of goitre in the schools had taken up a good deal of time, all the records required entailing a great : deal of clerical work. Twenty-two parents were visited regarding treatment required for their children. •
Relief work had again caused a very busy month. The pound scheme was proving invaluable. A number of. requests for assistance had been received from people in country districts, and the society was indebted to various branches of both the Women’s Institute and the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union for help in investigating and assisting them where possible. Many families had been visited and new cases investigated, nine cases had received treatment and two cases taken for medical attention. Thanks to generous assistance the society had been able to supply a number of families with extra milk and. regular supplies of soup had 'been most welcome also. Clothing had been donated by many friends, including two parcels from the Home Economics Club and the Girl Guides.
At a meeting of the executive of the North Taranaki Council of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, held in New Plymouth, Archdeacon G. H. Gavin presided. Apologies were received from the Waitara and Lepperton delegates. Airs. A. Patrick presented her report as the council’s delegate to the first meeting of the council of the New Zealand Red Cross Society held at Red Cross headquarters, Wellington.
