TERMS OF THE AGREEMENT REJECTION BY THE UNIONS STOPPAGE MAY BE AVERTED REQUEST FOR CONFERENCE OFFER MADE BY OWNERS By Telegraph.—Press Association. Greymouth, Last Night. The terms proposed as the result of the recent Westport conference of coal miners and owners for fi new agreement covering the West Coast collieries have been submitted to the unions and by them rejected. It is hoped, however, that a stoppage will be averted as a fresh conference has been arranged. Mr. William Purdie, secretary of the West Coast Miners’ Council, said the decision had been communicated to Mr. T. O. Bishop, the Coal Owners’ Association secretary, with a request for another conference, preferably on the West Coast, to see if an amicable settlement was obtainable; also suggestions that work should continue in the meantime under the terms of the old agreement. In reply, Mr. Bishop stated that the owners had instructed him to state that if the miners sent a deputation to meet them at Wellington on Wednesday, August 10, they would permit work to continue under the old terms in the meantime.
It is understood the miners are sending delegates as the owners suggest.
