CALLER TAKES WATCHES
INCIDENT IN SHOP. AN ARREST MADE LATER. A man went into a shop of Watsons, Limited, jewellers, at Christchurch on Monday and said he wanted to purchase three watches, and a chain. He made his choice and then was shown a ring which would not fit his finger. It was suggested that a messenger should be sent to ascertain if a ring to fit could be got in another shop, but the purchaser declined the suggestion, and tendered a cheque. When the assistant said that he would see the manager about the cheque the caller calmly pocketed the jewellery, £4O worth, and walked smartly from the shop. The assistant followed him to a bank, which the man entered. He paced up and down the floor inside and came out, making his way along the street to another building. The assistant telephoned the police, and in doing so lost the .man. Later in the day a man who visited another shop of the firm was identified and detectives made an arrest
