MAYOR’S RELIEF FUND

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The committee of the Mayor’s emergency fund for the relief of distress met at New Plymouth yesterday. Present: The Mayor (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths). Messrs. P. E. Stainton, B. Thorne and F. T. Bellringer (secretary). Referring to the two carcases presented by the Master Butchers’ Association for distribution during the week ended July 22, Mr. Stainton said the meat had been distributed pro rata according to the size of the families. One hundred and seventeen families had benefited, the meat reaching about 700 persons. Thanks were due to Adjutant Green and his staff for making out the orders. In connection with the suggestion to distribute the meat solely through the master butchers Mr. Thorne had taken the matter up with the relief workers’ section. Mr. Thorne had reported that they were about equally divided on the question, some wishing to continue with their present organisation for the distribution of meat and others being willing to fall in with the new proposal. Mr. Stainton understood that unless the whole distribution was made through them the master butchers did not want to have anything to do with the matter. In fairness to the master butchers, who were carrying a certain amount of stock in anticipation, it was only right to advise them that no definite conclusion had yet been reached in regard to the mater. Mr. Stainton reported that the question of appointing a welfare officer in order to avoid overlapping by the various organisations administering relief was still under discussion. Mr. Bellringer reported that he was holding £lO4 for the Mayor’s fund. It was decided to obtain a statement from the Hospital Board showing the money received, towards the fund that subsequently became known as the Mayor’s relief fund, and how it had been disbursed. The Mayor and Messrs. Stainton and Thorne were deputed to meet the social welfare committee of the board to decide on a method of future distribution.
