SOUTHERN MAORI SEAT

BY-ELECTION TAKING PLACE FIVE CANDIDATES GO TO POLL. EUROPEANISED MAORI REJECTED. Five candidates will contest the Southern Maori by-election, to be held to-day, necessitated by the death of Mr. T. Makitanara, the former Government member. There were originally seven who intended to stand, but the nomination of Mr. Hari Wi Katene, the Labour candidate, was rejected on the ground that he was an Europeanised Maori, that is one who under the Native Land Act had been declared as European, while it was announced on Monday thax Mr. Wiremu Mihaka, Independent Coalitionist, had withdrawn in favour of the official Coalition candidate.. The candidates who will go to the poll to-day are: William Te Ihoka Parata, official Coalition. Eruera Tihema Tirikatene, Independent Ratana Party. Joseph Beaton, Independent Coalition.

Peter MacDonald, Independent, Tame Kaiporohu Bragg, Independent Reform.
