NAZIS ADVANCE

ELECTIONS IN GERMANY LIKELIHOOD OF A DEADLOCK * HITLER SHUNS COALITION GAINS BY THE COMMUNISTS GOVERNMENT’S DIFFICULTY CO-OPERATION REQUIRED By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10 p.m. Berlin, Aug. I. Practically all the counting of votes ia the German Keichs tag elections was finished at midnight, when the results were:—

A total of 612,974 votes went to "freak” parties or were invalid. Herr Loebe, Herr Hugenberg and Herr Thaelmann were rejected. 'The party strengths in the last Reichatag, as the result of the poll in, September, 1930, were: — i

Well-informed people believe Herr Adolf Hitler’s compromising connection with General von Schleicher checked his triumphant career. REDS’ SURPRISING GAINS. The relative success of the Communists was '« surprise. They apparently won over many Socialists owing to the workers’ disappointment at the mild behaviour of the displaced Prussian members of the Cabinet. Dr. Bruening was returned for Dusseldorf, where the Socialists secured one seat, the Nazis four, the Communists three and the Centre Party six. Herr Hitler announced that he would refuse to join any coalition. The Government''’has decreed a political truce until August 10. No political meetings of any kind will be allowed. The Berlin correspondent of the Times says a comparison of the average results with the recent State election shows the - election has brought the Communists notable gains! and almost stopped the Nazi gains, says a London cable. The Communists more than recouped the total losses of 1930 and in the State elections. The Nazis, who advanced by leaps and bounds from 18.3 per cent, of the total votes in 1930 to 35.7 in the State elections, gained only 2 per cent, further. The combined Right parties obtained only 45 per cent., compared with 48 per cent, in the Prussian elections. Unless the Government is able to win the co-operation, or at least the toleration, of the Centre and Bavarian People’s Parties, or the Communists are suppressed, the same deadlock will be reached as in the Prussian Diet. ~ Brilliant sunshine’ favoured the polling, which apparently is the heaviest t>n record. The day passed quietly in Berlin, in violent contrast to Saturday’s many clashes, perhaps because 20,000 solice were on duty in Berlin alone. Half’ the electors voted before one »’clock. Many sick were carried to the sooths in stretchers.

PRESIDENT CHEERED. The Chancellor, Herr von Papen, voted in the morning at a tavern near the River Spree. President von Hindenburg drove from his estate at Nuedeck, East Prussia, and recorded his vote in the village school. He was cheered by the villagers. General Ludendorff did not vote, and Instructed his small following to boycott the election. It generally appears that the Nazi vote in the cities has declined, compareed with the Prussian Diet election, but has increased compared with the 1930 Reichstag election. In the country districts the Nazis considerably improved their position. In the working class districts and towns the red flag and hammer and sickle of the Communists outnumbered the other emblems. The Socialist red flag with three arrows was also much in evidence. The Socialists in many cases increased the votes they recorded in the Prussian election. * The Centre Party is about stationary, the Nazi gain's being at the expense of the smaller Right parties, who lost heavily. Clashes in many districts resulted in eight deaths during the polling. One death occurred when an aeroplane which was distributing pamphlets crashed. Numbers have been wounded and 257 have been arrested.
