FEROCIOUS ATTACK

ALLEGED CONSPIRACY. HEARST PRESS CAMPAIGN. London, July 19. A ferocious broadcast, address by Mr. Randolph Hearst, denouncing European Governments, has reached every home in America. " The Hearst Press is conducting a strenuous campaign against any reduction in war debts, says the New York representative of th© News-Chronicle. There ar© constant references to a “crooked conspiracy .of European confidence men bent on. robbing us.” The recent broadcast by. Sir Walter Layton, editor of the Economist, regarding the question of war-debts and reparations, is given prominence, and described as confirming the belief that the “gentleman’s agreement” is intended to thrust another £2,■000,000, 000 burden on America taxpayers. Many politicians appear impressed with the public’s response to this inflammatory outburst, and believe that votes can be won by the cry: “Not a cent off' debts 'while Americans are starving!” . —. . We won thehwar. *W© won-it for ourselves. ’ “Wo won it for the Allies.” ■ These are th© exact words: us°d by Mr. Hearst in replying in his newspapers to..what he calls the “debt cancellation ’conspn-acy/’ " . ■ “Who trusts people that repudiate -their debts?” asks Mr! Hearst. '‘Can perfidy promote peace? No! How can there be a gentleman’s'.agreement between wclsliers? Let us call it plainly a crooked conspiracy by European confidence.. meh and their American confederates •to rob the American people.” Aiid three columns more,, to the same effect. " ■*".' - * — .
