BERMAN THREAT TO ARM
“FAILURE- OF CONFERENCE ‘HYPOCRISY’ OF THE FRENCH GERMAN. ARMY IMPOTENT THE ‘.‘ONLY ALTERNATIVE” By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. Berlin, July 27. That Germany would arm. to the level of its neighbours if they refused to disarm to 'her level was threatened by General Schleicher in a broadcasting to the German people. General Schleicher cited the "catastrophic failure” of the Disarmament Conference and the insecurity of Germany and accused France of hypocrisy because she was aware that the German forces, unarmed, could not oppose a single French division, still less the frontierfortresses. On the day the German Army was barely capable of protecting its own frontiers. The only alternative was for Germany to reorganise its army, which would be done.
SUPPORT FOR ADOLF HITLER
PROFESSOR’S DECLARATION. (RUMOURS OF HITLER REVOLT. Rec. 10 p.m. Berlin, July 27. Though they dislike some of his aims, 51 university professors have published a manifesto supporting Herr Adolf Hitler’s policy of fighting the influence of foreign races, the restriction of egoism in all fields and the determination to deliver Germany from the materialistic shackles imposed by' international finance. They expect Herr Hitler to purify public life and achieve the salvation of the German people. The Hitlerites have made great preparations to ensure the success of a meeting Herr Hitler will address to-day. The concentration of Hitler’s storm detachments has led to the revival of fears of an attempted “putsch.”
The, story goes that if the polling results known late on Sunday show that the Hitlerites are likely to obtain 50 per cent, of the votes a revolt may be attempted during the early hours, of Monday with a view to making Herr Hitler Chancellor. The Reich Government, however, has issued a statement that if a putsch is attempted all the forces will be used to defeat the adventure. Well-informed circles believe General Schleicher will order the Reichswehr soldiers to shoot and that they will obey. The Allgemeine Zeitung foresees a new Government under Herr von Papen, including representatives of the Hitlerites.
