CONFERENCE AT WESTPORT.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Westport, Last Night. The coal conference opened at Westport to-day, there being present Messrs. .Havel! (chairman), Hardie, Christie, Stitt, Hunter, J. C. Brown, G, Smith, McGhie and T. 0. Bishop (representing the mine-owners) and Messrs. Hayward, Purdie, Evans, Smeaton, Barber, Coppersmith, Jack, Connell and Hornsby (miners). The conference opened at 2 p.m. and continued till 5 p.m, tn reply to Press Association, inquiries the chairman stated that the old agreement .was taken as the basis of discussion and was considered clause by clause, together with . the amendments sought by 'both parties. Nothing more could be eaid at present. Mr. Purdie, secretary to the West Coast Miners’ Council, commented that & good atmosphere prevailed at the conference.
