Mr. F. S. Johns left New Plymouth yesterday to visit Nelson. Mr. Malcolm E. Clow, New Plymouth, has entered the public hospital for an operation. Mr. William Moon, Leach Street, who celebrated his 87th birthday last April, has been a member of the Loyal Egmoni Lodge of Oddfellows for almost 69 years, the anniversary falling in September.

The death has occurred of Sir John Ferguson, aged 62, the Conservative member for Twickenham in the House of Commons, reports a London cable. He Was president of th© Institute of Bankers from 1925 to 1927 and was a member of the British Australian Wool Realisation Association.

Mr. N. K. Mac Diarmid, a highly respected citizen of New Plymouth, celebrated his 82nd birthday on Sunday. He received congratulations from many parts of the Dominion. Mr. Mac Diarmid was born at C'aloolh, New South Wales, and came to New Zealand in 188 G.

Major A. E. Conway left New Plymouth yesterday for Wellington, where he wilf attend a conference of staff officers of the Central Command to discuss matters in connection with the year’s training scheme. Captain Hunt will leave this morning to attend the conference.

Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., and Mrs. Smith returned to New Plymouth by the mail train last night. Mr; J. S. Jessup, chairman of th© Unemployment Board, intends to come to New Plymouth to-day by car, and a conference will be held to-day regarding the unemployment position in New Plymouth.

Th© death has occurred of Countess Beatty, wife of Earl Beatty, Admiral of th© Fleet, reports a London cable. Countess Beatty was Miss Ethel Field, eldest daughter of Mr. Marshall Field, sen., of Chicago. She married Earl Beatty in 1901. Notification that he has been appointed with a permanent commission to the Royal Air Force, England, has been received by Mr. Roy Faville, Hamilton. Mr. Faville, who is th© son of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Faville, gained th© Fryer Memoral Prize for the best non-com-missioned officer in the Northern Command in 1927. After leaving the Hamilton High School he attended Canterbury College, where he graduated bachelor of engineering. Mr. Faville will leave for England next month.

From Oxford, England, comes news of the death of Mr. Richard StaplesBrowne, only son of the late Mr. Frederick John Staples-Browne, of Brashfield House, Bicester, and Brampton, Oxon. Mr. Staples-Browne, who was 50 years of age, had been in failing health for the last year. He passed away oil June 5 at Butlers Court, Alvescot, Oxon, leav’- a widow to mourn his loss. Mr. Staples-Browne was twice married, his first wife having been the New Zealander, Maggie Papakura, who died two years ago. During the war he was very closely in touch with members of the New "Zealand Expeditionary Force, as, with the rank of captain, he acted as adjutant at the No. 2 New Zealand General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames.
