, . Messrs, d- Henderson, G. Yarra.ll and G., Kendall ' asked the council to petition the Unemployment Board through the. Public . Works Department, asking that- about 60 chains of the Makahu Road be. metalled, giving, access to all their ’properties'. ' They pointed out that at present 1 their ■ properties were bearing a heavy burden of rates and special rates for road formation. and bridge, construction as well as-for road metalling,, which did not reach their properties, preventing them from further loading their properties. They suggested that the work should be done in conjunction with the present metalling wonk on the same road, as the workmen’s camp was. only about three’ miles away. ’ The chairman said he understood that Mr. Anderson, the Public Works inspector, had inspected the work and was very favourably impressed with it. Or.- Ford held-the - road, was certainly well' worthy of consideration. The settlers had a deserving case. It was resolved to forward the request- to the Public Wonks Department with a recommendation .that it be given effect, and a copy, of the. letter will be. forwarded to Mr.‘W. J. Polson, M.P. ■ ■ RIDING BUSINESS. ■ Or.- Ford-asked when the lorry could be sent to the Strathmore riding to cart the maintenance metal. which the

C-r. Gower asked whether-it would be possible tq procure unemployed labour to improve some of the bends on the Kohuratahi saddle. The chairman stated that two men would be available. There’were two sharp bends with an in-bend between where it was necessary to make a filling which would require some willows.to hold it. It was resolved to put a man on the Mangapapa Road for a fortnight.

The South Taranaki Automobile Association notified that as requested a signpost would ‘be erected at the junction of the Tawhiwhi and Junction Rogds at. the first opportunity. Mr. J. F, Phillips, Eltharn, applied for permission to cross the road with a private telephone line from Te Wera to his property.—Permission was granted.. . The district engineer (Mr. P. Keller) notified that authority for £SSO to be expended .on the Tangarakau bridge had been cancelled and re-issued for expenditure by the Public Works Department. '
