FLIGHT OF BIRDS

“HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS” SPECTACLE IN MANAWATU. Estimated to number hundreds of thousands, a large Hight of birds a,bout the size of an ordinary sparrow was seen by Mr. J. G. Driver, of Palmerston North, to be passing over Pohangina in a southerly direction last Thursday. He. watched them for half-an-hour and they ( were still passing. “It is the largest flock I have ever seen,” stated Mr. Driver. “The birds seemed tired, as if they had come a long way. Why they were going south I cannot say, but it seems to 'be a sign of an early spring, as the birds would hardly be leaving New Zealand at this time of the year.” A Nature lover states that the birds were most likely starlings flying high, at which distance they w-ould look like i sparrows. Flights of starlings in tens lof thousands are sometimes seen in I Hawke’s Bay.
