APPEAL FOR WAR RELIEF

REPLY FROM THE MINISTER.

TAX WOULD HAVE TO BE RAISED.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) received a telegram today from the Minister of Employment (the Hon. Adam Hamilton) stating that an increase in the relief rations now being granted could be given only if a further increase in the unemployment tax was imposed, and it was even doubtful whether the present scale of relief could be maintained without an increase in taxation. ■

The Minister’s telegram was in reply • to Mr. Sullivan’s communication following a conference held at Christchurch to consider the Government’s rations scheme. Mr. Sullivan intends to call the conference again to consider- the Minister’s telegram and discuss possible steps to assist in securing more adequate relief for those in need. /
