HAWERA AERO CLUB MEETS
PRESIDENT REVIEWS WORKING.
SOUND FINANCIAL POSITION.
The annual meeting of the Hawera Aero Club was held last night, Dr. n. F. Buist presiding. There was a good attendance. . In his annual report the president drew attention to the very sound financial position of the club. The accumulated fund stood at £7681 19s. 9d., of which nearly £7200 was represented by liquid assets. The working account showed a deficit of £229 14s. 10d., but in. considering this it had to be borne in mind that certain non-recurring expenditure was made. For instance, £43 10s. lOd. was spent in connection. vrith the Hawera jubilee week flying denionstration, arid £3O. was spent- on assisting flying members to make a trip, to Auckland by air. Substantial expenditure was incurred in repairing tlie.han-o-ar, the total being' £5B 7?. lid. It was not likely that repairs and maintenance to the hangar in future years would be anything like that,- amount. Depreciation.amounting to‘ £271 16s. 6d. had been written off in the year, of which £2OO was the amoupt’ by- which the club had written down its interest in the living equipment owned, by tjie Western “Federated (N. 1. , Flying Club. The club was pleased to see that Mr. F. -V. Lysons had made a good recovery from his accident at Blenheim. As soon as Mr. Lysons had passed the, convalescent stage the club had appointed him club captain. It was proposed to establish a mode” aero club in Hawera so as to give young people an interest in flying. Mr. T. M. Ellis was in charge of that department ot • the club’s activities. . ' . • Very few pupils had come forward to learn flying. This was not unexpected because owing to the existing financial depression quite a lot of young men who would like to commence flying found it quite out of reach of their pockets. However, he was satisfied that with the return of better times more active flying could be anticipated, and for this reason he felt that the club should continue to husband [its resources. _ ■ Last year a .Christmas air mail was inaugurated, and, owing to the efforts of the club, a stcfji was made at Hawera. There was more mail picked up at Hawera than anywhere else on. the route, and Hawera was definitely on the map as a stopping place for-air mail when that means of transit became as popular in New Zealand as it was abroad,: , Arrangements, were bejng made, to reorganise the Western Federated .Flying Club and. of these arrangements he anticipated all club members would approve. The relations existing between , the. various clubs constituting the federation had been very happy during, the year, and he was satisfied that the clubs on the coast did a wise thing when they joined together in operating aeroplanes.; Officers elected were: Patron,.ML H. G. Dickie, M.P.; president, Dr. W. F. Buist; vicerpresidents, Mrs. C. Macßae and Mr. F. V. Lysons; club captain. Mr. B. Haybittie; vice-captain, Mr. B. Nicholas; honorary solicitor, Mr. A. K. Davies; permanent secretary, Mr.-W. G. Wa.lkley; delegates to. federation, the pi evident, the secretary and Mr. Freyberg. The formation of a model aeroplane section of the club for juniors wa» decided upon after Mr. Ellis had outlined the preliminary steps that had been taken. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs. Ellis, Spragg and Haybittie was appointed to control the section. The subscription was fixed at a shilling. The first books for the recently established library were on view at the meeting and the comprehensive, selection was favourably commented on by members. It was decided to send £lO to an English' firm for the purchase of the best of the latest books'as they became available. Dr. Buist, Messrs. Freyberg and Hayhittie were appointed a library committee.
