PUNGAREHU NEWS

On Wednesday evening a large crowd gathered at the local -hall, the occasion being a gift evening -to Miss Bertha Newport, who is shortly to be married. The evening was spent pleasantly in dancing, with euchre and ping pong for the non-dancers. A large collection of. valuable presents was placed on the stage, and these were opened by friends of the guest of the evening. Mr. H, A. Corbett, president of the hall society, referred to the keen interest Miss Newport had taken in all hall functions and to the valuable assistance she had rendered. He asked her to accept a miniature grandfather clock as a gift from the various committees. He trusted that, after her marriage, she would 5A residing in Punga-rehu still, Deacon replied on behalf of Miss Newport. During the evening Mrs. C. Hurley sang two songs, which were greatly appreciated. After supper dancing was continued, the music -being supplied by Miss E. Gilhooley and the Misses Julian. 'Euchre prizes were won by Mrs. Pollard and Mr. G. Newport. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Mr. A. Newport and Miss M. Doyle, A very pleasant evening was concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”

On Saturday evening the Domain Board held a very successful euchre party to raise funds to procure shrubs for the domain. There'was a good attendance and a pleasant time was spent. Euchre prizes were won by Mrs. T. Harvey, Mrs. E. Gray and Mrs. T. Renton, and by Messrs. J. Jones and L. Newport. Music for the dance was supplied 'by Aliss E. Gilhooley and Miss I. Corbett. Play was also conducted by six ladies, who had tied for special prize in the last euchre series. Miss E. Gilhooley was the successful player.
