ATHLETIC CENTRE CRITICISED
COLLECTING OLYMPIC EXPENSES. OTAGO’S VIEW NOT UNDERSTOOD. By Telegraph.—Press Association.' Wellington, Last Night. The president of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association (Mr. R. W. McVilly) made a statement at a meeting of the council to-night in reply to a letter from the Otago Centre taking exception to-remarks he had made at a recent meeting concerning Otago’s attitude in connection with the raising of expenses to send the runner E. J. Lovelock to the Olympic Games,
Mr. McVilly had suggested that Otago should collect £5O, but the Otago Centre had replied that it was a national matter. It was not until the Timaru High School had taken action that Otago had done anything. Mr. McVilly said he had been careful not to introduce any personalities into the matter but he had noticed that in every instance the Otago Centre had made a personal attack upon him. Otago’s attitude in connection with the collection of Lovelock’s expenses had not been creditable and Mr. McVilly could not understand it.
