HAWERA BOWLERS’ YEAR

CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING.

WINNERS OF COMPETITIONS. The annual meeting of the Hawera Bowling Club was held last night in the club's pavilion, the president (Mr. G. A. Burgess) presiding over a large attendance of members.

The report congratulated members upon a successful season, stating that the financial position had been maintained, the year’s working showing a surplus, although there was a small cash deficit of £6 2s. 6d. The surplus for the year had been £934 6s. 7d. as against £9Ol 6s. 2d. for the previous year. From a playing aspect, the season had been one of great success. Three teams had been entered in the South Taranaki Shield Division, two teams of four rinks each playing on Saturday and one on Wednesday. In addition to shield fixtures friendly matches had been played against Southern Auckland representatives, Tariki, Stratford, Avon, Eltham, Opunake, Manaia, Patea, Park and Waverley. The Syme Shield coinpetition had been held on New Year's Day and congratulations were extended to the Park club both upon their success in this competition and in winning divisional honours. During winter months card evenings had been held in the pavilion and had been successful, both socially and financially. Outsiders had supported the evenings very well, but greater enthusiasm could have been exhibited by members. On opening day the Syme Memorial Honours Board had been unveiled and the club was grateful to the Syme family for the appropriate memorial. Congratulations were extended to Mr. A. E. Stone, who won the Southern Division singles championship, and to Messrs. H. Edwards, J. T. Saunders, L. J. Bull and M. J. Squire, the rink that won the one-day tournament at Eltham. During Jubilee Week a one-day tournament had been conducted by the two Hawera clubs and Mr. F. Quin's Park rink proved the ultimate winner. On Labour Day the club had held its own rink tournament, while the progressive pairs tournament had fallen on Boxing Day. Congratulations were extended to the winners of the club competitions, as follows: Championship singles, A. E. Stone; runner-up, L. J. Bull. Championship pairs, F. E. Clarke and J. D. Hamilton; runners-up, T. Herbert and T. Corkill; Bisox Cup, W. JI. Canning; run-ner-up, L. J. Bull; Bennc/t and Sutton Cup, C. M. Colclough; runner up, W. T. Rud go. An iron fence had been erected on the western boundary and thanks were extended to members who helped. Appreciation of tho excellent services of the outgoing committee was expressed and mention made of the wonderful condition in which the green warden (Mr. S. Adamson) and the caretaker (Mr. S. Williams) had kept the greens. Thanks were extended to the ladies who had presided at afternoon teas find inter-club functions.

Officers for the year were elected as follows: Patron, Mr. J. Hicks; president. Mr. G. A. Burgess; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. E. Stone and H. Townsley; general committee. Messrs. T. C. Hobbs, E. JI. Bardsley, H. S. Maslin, M. J. Squires, C. Cropton, J. Foy, C. Lovell, D. McCormick, T. Canning; secretary and treasurer, Mr. F. E. Clarke; auditor, Mr. A. W. Wilson.

HURLEYVILLE DISTRICT NEWS.

ROOT CROP COMPETITIONS

Judging of the boys’ and girls’ club root crop competition has been completed at Hurleyvillc, Mr. Hogg, chief agricultural instructor, being the judge. Plots in the Wanganui Board’s area are this year arranged together in lots at the school or adjacent grounds. Having them so arranged eliminates unfair yield. This plan promised to be much more successful than the past arrangements, when plots were not so grouped. Hurleyvillc results were as follows, the figures relating to weight per acre, cultivation and quality: — Mangolds.

The euchre party held in aid of the hall funds on Tuesday night was well attend'ed, fourteen tables being occupied in play. Prizes were won by Mrs. H. Palmer and Mr. A. Amon. One more party of the scries is to be held at a date* to be arranged. Mr. and Mrs. Smith and family, who have been holidaying in North Taranaki, have returned to Hurleyvillc.

Mrs. Jones, accompanied by Miss Rita and Mr. Eric Jones, are on holiday in Auckland.

A football match between Hurleyville and Patea Convent School last Saturday resulted in a win for Convent by 8 to nil. PERSONAL ITEMS. The esteem in which the late Mrs. Hurley was held was. shown by the large and representative attendance at the funeral at Hawera yesterday morning. After requiem Mass had been celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church, New Plymouth, by Father J. Henley, the cortege proceeded to St. Joseph’s Church, Hawera where a short service was held, and then to the Hawera cemetery, where the burial service was conducted by Father Henley. u Pall-bearers were Mrs. Hurley’s six sons. Mrs. Hurley is- survived by her husband, Mr. Timothy Hurlev, New Plymouth, her four daughters and six sons—Mrs. A. J. Hopcroft (Normanby), Mrs. W. Chadwick (Hawera), Mrs. J. W. Connell and Miss K. Hurley (New Plymouth), Messrs. Daniel, George, ami Francis (Okaiawa), Timothy (“Ted”) (Te Roti), -Thomas and Albert (Wanganui). Mrs. Hurley, a former resident of Hurleyville and Hawera, was born near Ballarat. She was a noted church worker.

Mrs. Mary Henderson, a pioneer resident of Manutahi, died at the residence of her brothers, Messrs. J. and C. Campbell, Manutahi, on Thursday at the age 0f,79 years.

<Re<»ret at the loss of an old and esteemed member, the late Mrs. Harrop, was expressed at yesterday’s annual meeting of the Hawera Croquet Club.

It was with deep regret that the death of Mr. W. Janson, one of the most popular members of the Hawera Bowljug Club and a man who had always been held in the highest esteem by his fellow’ bowlers, was mentioned in the report presented to the annual meeting ot members by the president (Mr. G- A. Burgess) at Hawera last night.
