PROSPECTS FOR TIMARU RACES.

W. RENNIE RIDING COKRY TEAM.

(By

"Hurry On.")

Tt was stated, recently that D. O’Connor would ride Mr. J. J. Corry’s jumpers, Make Up, Landmark and Appledore, in. their Australian engagements. Owino- to a hitch in the arrangements, however, the Riccarton horseman will not make the trip to Melbourne. W. Rennie, who steered Landmark to victory in the Great Northern Hurdles, will make the trip to* do the team’s ridingLancer will be ridden by I. Tilson at Washdyke to-day, when he will make his first appearance as . a steeplechaser. He was a good hurdler and in his recent schooling efforts he has negotiated brush fences at Riccarton like a veteran. He has shown signs of lameness lately, but the trouble, which is in one of his heels, is not regarded seriously. ' Al Jolson is back to form and he is a very useful sort when at his best. With only 111 b. above the minimum he should be handy at the finish in the Seadown Handicap at the South Canterbury meeting to-day. Ranelagh may prove the hardest that he has to beat. When Standfast fell while contesting the Great Northern Hurdles he injured one of his hocks, and consequently had to forgo his later engagements for the meeting. R« Mateer had the Valkyrian treldinor in great fettle, and it is to be TiopedYhat the injury, will not be serious enough to put him out of action for any length of time. In his earlier form over hurdles Standfast displayed a fair amount of promise for a novice, and he is a horse likely to do considerably better with' more experience. The Irish-bred Colonel Cygnus performed so well at the recent Dunedin meeting that he looks sure to be well supported when he goes out to contest the’Prince Edward Handicap at Timaru to-day. The distance, one mile and aquarter, will be in his favour, and he will test out Red Heckle, Rational 11. and company. At the recent Dunedin meeting French Fleet won the hack steeplechase on each of the three days, and did his task on each occasion in good style. He is down to contest the open event at Washdyke to-day, when he will be opposed by Snowfall, Lancer, Palm and Valves, and the public will have an opportunity of finding out how good his form really was. If he. shapes satisfactorily to-day he is to be sent on td contest the big event at Trenthaxn. Well-bred Mares.

Mr. H. M. Reeves Ims some very fine foals running at his Hororata Stud, Canterbury. Sennight, by Day Comet from Week End, has a wellgrown filly by Tea Tray and is in foal to Paper Money. In view of the form shown by Pillow Fight (son of Week End), Sennight may go to Night Raid next season. Other mares at the stud have no foals.
