Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Sykes have returned to New Plymouth from a visit to Invercargill.

Sympathy with Mr. F. Boulton, Mr. J. Bruce and Mr. W. Bruce because of the loss of relatives was expressed by the West End Bowling Club last night.

Mr, John Braithwaite, assistant town clerk, was last night appointed to the town clerkship of Oamaru rendered vacant by the retirement of Mr. Charles Kent after many years’ service, says a Press Association message.

Mr. W. Graeme-Holder, who was called to Wellington last week in connection with the proposal to produce a feature talkie film in Taranaki, has returned to New Plymouth. Preliminary arrangements for the production have been made.

Regret at the death of Mr. J. D. Sole, president for some years of the West End Bowling Club, was expressed at the annual meeting of the club last night. Mr. Sole, it was said, was a foundation member of the club, a most generous supporter and loyal worker on behalf of the club.

Mr. A. W. Johnston, an elected member of the Samoan Legislative Council died on Wednesday, says an Apia cable. He arrived in Samoa with the military in 1916. For t welve years he was with the Burns Philp Company and for the last two years was the company’s station inspector. He was elected to the Legislative Council in November, 1927. Regret was expressed at the absence through an accident, of Mr. A. H. Halcombe from the annual reunion of the Urenui Returned Soldiers’ Association last night. Captain Hartnell said it was the first time Mr. Halcombe had not been present at the function. AR the ex-soldiers in the district knew the splendid work Mr. Halcombe had bone for them during the war.

The death occurred on Wednesday night, following a heart seizure, of Mr. Charles Blenkhorn, aged 62, solicitor, who has been Mayor of Levin for. the past three years, and served a previous term of four years during the war and epidemic period. He was also a member of the Horowhenua Power Board and the Foxton Harbour Board, and held many other public offices. He served in the South African war. He leaves a wife and eight children.

The secretary of the New Plymouth Harbour Board, Mr.. C. S. 'Rennell, is indisposed, and is likely to be absent from duty for some time, A resolution of sympathy with Mr. Rennell was passed at a meeting of the board yesterday, and hopes were expressed for his speedy recovery. During Mr. Renjiell’s absence Mr. N. Lealand, the board’s accountant, is acting-secretary.

Mr. R. N. Carrington, of the Australian United Press, Limited, was a passenger by the Monowai, which arrived in Wellington from Sydney on Monday, He will join the Aorangi at Auckland on June 28 and will proceed to the Ottawa Conference. Mr. Carrington is a grand-son of Mr. O. Carrington, who, with his brother, Mr. F. A. Carrington, founded New Plymouth. Mr, Wellington Carrington, father of the visitor, left New Zealand in 1878, and later became a railway engineer of note in .Australia. He rose to acting-engineer-in-chief in Western Australia. A sister is Mrs, 0. Samuel, widow of the late Hon. O. Samuel, M.L.C., New 'Plymouth.
