FITZROY FLOWER SHOW
KNOX CHURCH ACTIVITIES. COMMITTEE’S ANNUAL MEETING.. The annual meeting of the Fitzroy flower show committee of Knox Church was held, recently, the retiring president, Mr. E. Dingle, presiding over an attendance of about 20 members. Tho balance-sheet stated that, 'bearing in mind that the times for flower show work were in a much poorer state than in previous years, it was not unexpected that the amounts raised would be less than previously. Although the amounts handed to Knox Church (£44) and the Knox Ladies’ Guild (£l2) were less in total by £22 l'ss than the amounts handed over last year, the result was highly satisfactory. Tho displays and the competition brought forward by the committee’s efforts, however, left nothing to be desired. The entries (1186) and exhibitors (312) for the 'big show, though not up to last year’s record of 1457 and 352, were very evenly distributed over the schedule and appeared more as a general reduction in accordance with the times than a slump in any particular section.
The quality of the displays was equal to anything that had been put forward and drew favourable comment from both judges and patrons. The roses and cut blooms sections produced exhibits equal to any that have come forward in Taranaki. The floral decorative sections were equal in artistic value to previous efforts. The home industries and cooking section, which was a favourite with all patrons, produced some keen competition and a grand display. The fancywork section showed the tremendous energy put into this class of work by the women, and it was an outstanding example of the good, useful work that could be accomplished ’by the industrious. A pleasing feature was the number of exhibits staged bj T children and the younger folk. The display brought forward at the chrysanthemum show was greatly admired for its bright appearance, and, although entries were higher, the cash results were lower than last year. The committee could not but feel other than pleased at the results, and with the interest and support this show had received.
Easily the biggest ‘blow that the committee had suffered during its existence was the loss through marriage of its popular secretary, Mrs. Symons (nee Taylor). Her happy disposition and cheerful energy gained for the committee many supporters. The amount of work, always of the highest, which she did was tremendous, and the committee wished her the best of luck.
