ENTERTAINMENTS

EVERYBODY’S THEATRE.

“OVER THE HILL” MATINEE

“Over the Hill,” the Fox Movietone all-talking version of the famous silent picture, commenced a season of three matinees and three nights at Everybody’s, New Plymouth, last Saturday. A notable feature of the production is that it brought back Mae Marsh, who retired from the screen 12 years ago. The other stars who form the impressive cast of the Fox picture are James Dunn and Sally Eilers. “Over the Hill” is a drama of home life, the story of a family as it grows from childhood to manhood. There are some moving sequences- in the film, but sentiment has not been allowed to dominate the production, and there are some uproarious scenes enacted, all of which are appreciated all the more because of the appeal of the more solemn passages. The shorts include Movietone News, “Where East Meets West” (travelogue), and Cincsound News.

THE REGENT THEATRE. ROBERT WOOLSEY COMEDY. “Everything’s Rosie,” Robert Woolsey’s latest comedy, commenced a threenight season at the Regent, New Plymouth, last Saturday. Woolsey' soars to far higher comedy in this production even than he did with Bert Wheeler in their string of successes, “The Cuckoos,” “Half Shot at Sunrise,” “Hook, Line and Sinker,” and “Cracked Nuts.” As the faker who sells “Dreko” which Cures everything from love to rheumatism; as tho petty crook with the great heart' who adopts a helpless, abused waif and raises her to a creature of grace and beauty; as the auctioneer who sells “Big Bens” for “27 Jewel Swiss Movements,” Woolsey spills wisecracks with more than his accustomed speed, yet finds opportunity to give some excellent acting that lends a depth of pathos as effective as it is surprising. The excellent cast includes Anita Louise, Johnny Darrow, Florence Robert and Alfred P. James. The shorts include Rathe News, “Heroes of the Flames” (final chapter), Cartoon, Humanette (novelty), and “Micky’s Rebellion” (comedy).
