SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. There was a full attendance at a meeting of the Mangatoki school committee on Wednesday evening. Correspondence read included a reply from the Minister of E(lijca|aon acknowledging receipt of the letter containing the resolutions'passed at ti;e householders’ meeting protesting agahlJt certain recommendations of the Natumftl -Expenditure Commission with reference to educational economies.' The Ministei stated that the representations would receive careful consideration. A letter from the board secretary notified that Jean Dudley, of the Mangatoki School, had won the prize donated by the -United Fil'd Bi’igade.a Association for an. essay on < Fire licvention,” and that Messrs Lees and Dr. •Thomson would ' visit the school and present the prize at. an early date., --The chairiuan reported that tbe fireplaces had been repaired and the flic pits rebuilt. In reply to a circular fiom the Education Board cover had been taken against fire under -the blanket policy issued by the board, covering piano, library books, war memorial and other furnishings. ■ Delegates to the annual meeting of the South Taranaki School Committees’ Association reported on the remits dealt with. , . It was, decided to hold. a. school social and dance about the middle of July in aid of the school’s special account. . A call is to be made on parents to assist with the supply of cocoa, etc., to the children; : Arrangements -were made for a function to be held in connection with the visit of board members on Friday. FARMERS’ UNION MEETING. A meeting of the Mangatoki branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on Wednesday evening. There was a fair attendance presided over by Mr. W, -E. Carter.' . . The question of the excursion trip, to Palmerston North to visit Massey College was discussed, and arrangements made for a canvass to secure names of members desiring to take advantage of the trip. Exception was taken to the exclusion of wives of members in the arrangements made by the provincial executive. It was decided to hold root crop, hay and ensilage competitions if sufficient entries were submitted. The entry fees were reduced to 2s for the first entry and Is for additional entries. The laranaki Lime Company’s , representative promised two tons of lime as a prize for the competitions to be allotted as the committee desired. It was decided to hold a ball in June and details were left in the secretary’s hands. An address on lime apd its application was given by Mr. Linnell. Questions were asked freely add valuable information gained in the replies. The Mangatoki Hockey seven-a-side team reached the semi-finals Manaia in the junior competition, and lost to Tokaora by a hit over the line after extended time was played.
