CLUB FOR TERRITORIALS

FORMATION AT STRATFORD. To provide facilities for physical development and recreation as well as to further the social activities of the Stratford Territorials, the Stratford Service Club was formed at the drill hall on Friday night, the opening being performed by the Mayor (Mr. P. Thomson). Apart from a large number of officers and trainees of the platoon there was present Captain L. Hunt, N.Z.S.C., adjutant, First Battalion, Taranaki Regiment, from New Plymouth. The Mayor said the club would be a valuable institution to officers and territorials and would lend additional en joyment to the training. The members would benefit physically and mentally by the games. Lieutenant E. Morton thanked Mr. Thomson for his donation of two cups for the best machine-gun shot and the best rifle shot. Competition for the cups would be keen and would help to increase the efficiency of the platoon, he said.

Facilities are provided for many exercises, sports and games, including boxing, ping-pong, punch ball, skipping, basketball and rope climbing, cockade fighting, quoits, darts, medicine ball, rifle shooting and volley ball. Officers appointed were: Patron, Mr. P. Thomson; vice-patron, Captain A. W. White; president, Lieutenant E. Morton; vice-presidents, Colonel L. H. Jardine, D. 5.0., M.C., Colonel W. Foley, M.C., Major M. Urquhart, M.C., Major T. Gibbs, Major J. B. Hine, Lieutenant S. Macalister, Lieutenant R. Hosking, Lieutenant F. R. Lawn; secretary, Private W. H. Thomson; treasurer, Sergeant D. Bullock; organiser and chief instructor, Warrant Officer J. L. O. Rowe; hon. instructors, Messrs. W. Mills, W. J. Aitken and R. B. Reid; executive committee, Lieutenant Morton, Warrant Officer Rowe, Sergeant Carryer, Sergeant D. Blick, Corporals B. McMillan, M, Moore, T. Lindell, L. Wills; general committee, all N.C.O.’s and sub-section leaders.

BALL AT PUKENGAHU. WINNERS OF COMPETITIONS. The Pukengahu spinsters’ and bachelors’ ball on Thursday evening attracted a large attendance, visitors coming from as far as Kaponga, Inglewood and Hawera. Excellent music was played by Wills’ melodymakers. Extras were played by Misses Coleman and Wilmshurst and Messrs. Reid, Barleman and Shaws. Messrs. J. Walsh and.D. Old were masters of ceremony. Monte Carlo dances were won by Miss Frost and Mr. R. Irwin, Miss C. Wilmshurst and partner, Miss M. Walsh and Mr. L. Lash, and Mr. J. Swindlehurst and partner. Credit is due to the secretaries, Miss N. Harris and Mr. F. O’Neill, and a committee comprising Misses Harris, Walsh, Burke, Death, Moore, Coleman, Mehrtens, Peacock and Collins, and Messrs. F. O’Neill, J. O’Neill, Walsh, J. Coffey, K. Coffey, Crighton, Phyllips, Lash, Harris, Old, Marshall, Harper, Jones and Swiridlehurst.

TARIKI DISTRICT NEWS.

FAREWELL TO MR. GOLDING.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

An enjoyable farewell social and dance was tendered the Rev. Golding on Thursday in the Tariki hall by the parishioners, there being a good attendance. Music was played by Miss L Loveridge and Mr. J. Harris, and at intervals by Mr. Taylor. Non-dancers were catered for in the euchre room, controlled by Mr. G. Knowles. The prizes were gained by Mrs. H. Keri’ and Mr. H. McCullum. Mr. V. Harkness spoke of Mr. Golding’s short stay in the district and asked him on behalf of the people to accept a pair of fur-lined motor gauntlets. Mr. Golding replied, and, introduced his successor, Deacon Mutter. Supper was supplied by the ladies and dancing was continued until midnight. The Tariki A and B hockey teams visited. Waitara on Thursday. The A team were defeated by 7 goals to 4. Tariki’s goals were scored by J. Trass, S. Nicholls, J. Mahon and L. Hollis. The B team was victorious by 4 goals to 2, Tariki’s goals being scored by G. Hacker (2), L. Harris and H. Gush. The Tariki basketball girls played Inglewood Rovers, at Inglewood on Thursday, winning by 10 goals to 4. The scorers were Misses L. and R. Hueker and E. Taylor. Mr. and Mrs. R. James have returned from their honeymoon trip and are at their home at Surrey Road. Miss Dulcie McCullum, who has been suffering from the effects of a fall, collapsed at St. Mary’s School on Tuesday and has been confined to her home.

Mr. E. Loveridge has been indisposed for some time.

Many residents of Tariki went to Bell Block to attend the funeral of a former resident of Tariki, Mrs. E. R. Newell, aunt of Mr. B. and W. Crowe.

Mr. J. Trass is spending a few days in New Plymouth. Mrs. Loveridge, sen., is spending a few days in, the Stratford district. Air. D. Blanchard, a member of the hockey team, has been indisposed but is recovering. The Tariki school was visited last week by Dr. R. J. R. Mecredy, the general report being very satisfactory. A start has been made with the removal of the old factory foundation.

The Tariki school has formed two basketball teams and the boys are training hard at football.

ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS.

The lectures to be given at Midhirst on Thursday evening should be of special interest to farmers. They have been arranged under the auspices of the Midhirst branch of the Farmers’ Union. The subject will be milk grading and speakers will be Messrs. A. Ross (Government grader) and J. Hill-Motion (veterinarian). Both men are well qualified to speak on this important subject. Mr. Hill-Motion was in charge of the pure milk supply for the city of Glasgow. Arrangements are well in hand for the Eltham Anglican Ball to be held on June 30, and numerous novelties will be introduced to make a carnival atmosphere. Free buses are to run from Hawera and Stratford.
