SUNNY SKY MAY SO ON TOUR.

T, ANDMARK’S MELBOURNE CHANCE.

(By

"Hurry On.")

The performances of ths Gisborne mare Sunny Sky a.t the recent Ellerslie meeting stamp the daughter of Hunting Song as being welt above the average. Her feat of winning the Cornwall and King George Handicaps and then beating all but Manawhenua in the York Handicap is unique in the history of the. meeting. It is quite probable that she may also join ' in the migration acrost the Tasman and may make the trip to Melbourne. Sunny Sky’s dam is one of the progeny of that once fine performer Merry Roe, one of the best mares that have ever graced the New Zealand turf. A youngster whose career will be watched with interest is .receiving his preliminary instruction from R- Alexander at Hastings. This is a hair brother by Chief Ruler to that fine Victorian stayer Second Wind, the winner of the last King’s Cup at Hobart. The connections of Pillow Fight appear to change their intentions almost every month. Last week it was said that he was being specially prepared for an assault on the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, but apparently a change of plans has been decided upon and it zs now announced that he will not go to Australia but will make his reappearance at the Avondale meeting in September After her unsuccessful trip m Ausr tralia the two-year-old Gold Trail was turned out for a spell. She, hue furnished well during her let up and is expected to join the active brigade very shortly. • Two seasons ago Ponjola gave promise of turning out a really good cross-coun-try performer, but unfortunately be had to be thrown out of training. He has now been taken In hand again and on Tuesday morning gave a great display over a round of the steeplechase country at Hastings. It would only seem ■ a matter of his keeping sound for him to credit his owner with another stake. Though Gold Dawn went ttfo good races at Otaki, and was third on the second day, her efforts were not up tc the standard expected. When, first the daughter of Day Comet was tried over a distance of ground her efforts gave promise that she would develop into a good middle distance performer buz since winning at Awapuni her recent attempts have been veiy disappointing. After & spell she may do better next season. Though he failed to pay a dividend, Little Doubt ran two really good races at Ellerslie, finishing third in the Cornwall Handicap and fourth in the York Handicap the final day. He is undoubtedly an improved horse and his turn should not be far off. Trentham will probably see his next appearance with the colours up. He went a great race into second place on that course, only a head behind Admiral Drake, last October when only in receipt of 21b from r - Samson’s horse, whose subsequent deeds made that form look good. Mr. K McK. Duncan informed the writer that Otairi has been turned out eo-ain .and may not be put into training for --two years. He has the hunter Trouble in work and intends bringing him up for the . hunt meeting at New Plymouth in August.' -The Rangitikei Hunt Club is holding its meeting with hominal stakes, providing a five shilling totalisatort and. only charging half a crown for a,dmission.. • The distance of the Victorian Grand National Hurdles is three miles, and this should be in favour of a real stayer like Landmark, who despite his penalty will carry a lot of support in that event It is reported that he has been coupled with Make Up in the steeplechase to win a big sum.
