Sarazen achieved a record for the first half of the championship. with 139. Bobby Jones’ 140 at St. Andrew's in 1927 was the previous best. Sarazen admitted that his great second round was partly due to patches of good luck, but. it included a number of “brilliant recoveries from awkward places. The greatest shot was at the twelfth, where he sliced a drive into thick rough,/ A mighty 180-yard heavy mashie shot put him on the eAge of the green. He laid the approaches dead, needing only one putt on five greens. ‘ Alliss/and Davies were terribly disappointing. Both had an opportunity of 'gaining the lead. Alliss cracked at the 15th. Davies, if he had secured r figures on the last five, would have returned 68, but in a melancholy finish he dropped a stroke at evem hole. Despite Sarazen’s lead, nobody has abandoned hope for a British victory. MaCDonald-iSmith had an uphill struggle, as he began disastrously with seven at the first hole. Armour had such a disappointing first nine that the crowd deserted him. Nevertheless he • came home brilliantly in 33, comprising six' fours and three threes.
