CITIZENS’ COMMITTEE WANTED.
ADVICE TO HAWERA CHAMBER. “In order that propositions ■for spend? ing money can be considered and influence used to prevent the extravagance, which has grown to such a magnitude that it is alarnibig' ili’e taxpayers of New Zealand, I think it is iii the best interests of the taxpayers and., citizens of Hawera that a citizens’ committee should be formed. Everyone should take an interest fu the town and in the spending of''its : public ■ money; more especially in raising loans the pliability, for which is tq be borne by taxpayers.”
This was the text of a'letter from Mr. W, A. Hewitt read'at’ last night’s meeting of the ; Hawera Chamber of Commerce. Severe criticism of many .public and local body works jn Taranaki and' other parts of N®w Zealand'was made by Mr. Hewitt, who attended the meeting. Political ■ and- other considerations and a lack of investigation had. resultedin the wasting of thousands of pounds of public money, he said. The matter was very serious aucl the formation of a national association to watch the in-.. tere?ts of taxpayers was strongly urged, Stratford had formed such an association, and good work'was being accom-. plished.
After a brief discussion, and in v|ew of the importance of the matter, it was. decided to defer Consideration of it until next meeting.
