NORTH-SOUTH GAME
TARANAKI MEN PIROMINENT
COLLINS PLAYS BRILLIANTLY.
ANDREWS INJURED AFTER SCORING
(By Our Own Correspondent.)
Christchurch, June 4.
Taranaki Rugby tradition was well maintained by the three Taranaki men who played in the North-South Island game at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, on Saturday. J. Collins, as full-back for the North Island, played an outstanding game, his kicking being remarkably accurate and strong,. while his tackling was deadly. On the day’s play he well deserves his selection for the New Zealand All Black team to tour Australia. It was also fitting that two burly Taranaki men should battle for representative honours in the forward lines of their respective teams. One of them, R. Clarke, of Okaiawa, was a worthy representative of his’ province in both scrum and line-out, while the other, Alan H. Andrews, who gained his place in the South Island and Canterbury representative teams for the second season in succession, played a fast, aggressive game. The ex-New Plymouth High School player had' the honour of scoring the second and final South Island try, but had the misfortune to receive an injury, which necessitated his having to leave the field just after half-time. His excellent showing was particularly meritorious in view of the fact that he was called upon to mark the speedy and versatile F. Solomon, of Auckland. Oliver kicked off for the South Island to Clarke, who fielded the ball and punted to the southern twenty-five followed by the fast, pack of bustling North forwards. The North Island quickly gained the ascendancy in both back and forward lines. Kilby whipped the ball out on the blind side to Lilburne, who transferred to Bullock-Douglas, the speedy Wanganui winger, who was tackled a yard from the line hut heaved himself ovex' to score a brilliant try by the corner. Collins failed with the kick, and North led by .3—o. The North Island forwards, who were packing 3—4 —1, were playing a brilliant game, in which Clarke was conspicuous on several occasions. Solomon went over for North’s second try wide out, and Collins failed with the kick. North now led by 6—o. South made some dangerous rushes, in which Andrews, who was playing a solid game, was conspicuous, but the Northern defence was more than equal to the strain. Collins let nothing pass him, his line-kicking being uncannily accurate-’ He was not called upon to do a great deal of tackling early in the game, and his safe play prevented South from getting anywhere near the line. ’ . Play brightened up, going from one end of the field to the other. Andrews initiated a forward movement, which failed just short of the line. BullockDouglas scored two tries in quick succession, the second one of which Pollock converted, North leading at half-time by 14—0.
After resuming another two tries were added by North with Ridiculous ease, and. soon afterwards Bullock-Douglas scored again under the posts. McLean converted, and the score read North 20, South 0.
South made, a desperate effort which ended in a score by Hart, Holden converting from a difficult angle. Shortly afterwards play was stopped through Andrews being hurt, but he pluckily resumed. Judicious kicking put South on the attack and Andrews went crashing over the line to score a brilliant try. He was unfortunately injured, and had to leave the field as his try was being converted. North 25, South 10. Play was very even over the last stages of the battle, South attempting valiantly to penetrate the northern defence, and Collins was sound all the time and kept his side well up the field with deadly kicking. Bullock Douglas crowned North’s score with another unconverted try. Just on time Cattnell, a burly South forward, broke away with a surprising burst of speed down the line, but his kick was charged, down by Collins as the final whistle went with the game 28 —10 in North’s favour.
