CATHEDRAL BURGLARY
EXPLOSIVES USED ON SAFE. THIEVES OBTAIN £1 10s. Choir boys’ surplices and a mat were used to deaden the explosion when the safe in the vestry of St. Peter’s Cathedral, Adelaide, was blown open during a recent week-end. In the safe ivsts 305., which was stolen. / Detective A. Copp found evidence that a back door had been forced. The fact .that the surplices were not even scorched. the exact amount of explosive necessary to open the door having been used, has > led the police to believe that-the blow’ing was the work of an expert. The "thieves evidently thought that the entire Sunday collection at the cathedral, a substantial sum, would be left in the safe overnight. The money taken on Sunday is invariably banked after the evening service, by means of the after-hour banking facilities available in Adelaide. The money left in the safe consists chiefly of sums donated for specific purposes, and usually placed in the plate in envelopes.
