CLERGYMAN’S STIPEND

ANNUAL SALARY OF £5. CONTROVERSY IN SYDNEY. A meeting of the recently-elected parish council of St. Barnabas’ Church, Chatswood, Sydney, decided last week by 10 votes to 3 that the salary of the new rector, Canon Rook, be fixed at the rate of £5 per annum for the first six months of the current year. The meeting, which was private, was “stormv.” Canon Rook presided. Those who opposed the motion were the rector’s nominees to office, while the supporters of the motion were elected by the parishioners. Canon Rook refused to accept the motion and also refused to vacate the chair. Another chairman was appointed and the motion was carried.

It is understood that Canon Rook contends that the stipend was fixed when the parish was formed and that no alteration can be made unless by special arrangement, with the consent of the archbishop.
