SCIENTIFIC OCEAN RESEARCH

THE WILLIAM SCORESBY RETURNS WORK IN SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE. (British Wireless.) Rec. 5.5 p.m. Rugby, June 6. The Royal research ship William Scoresby reached London to-day after 19 months spent in scientific investigation in the south Atlantic and on the west coast of South America. During several moths the expedition was engaged in biological and hydrological work near South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, and in March last, finding the ice favourable, extended its observation as far as latitude 70 degrees south, results of great scientific value being obtained. Afterwards the scientists surveyed the Humboldt current on the west coast of South America, and from autumn until the return surveyed trawling grounds near the Falkland Islands to obtain an accurate estimate of their commercial possibilities. The William Scoresby is a small vessel, 134 feet long, with a complement of 23 under Commander Jolliffe.
