In the first Rugby League test of the English tour England 1 beat Australia by Sto 6. ' ' - ; In fine weather the match attracted.an enormous attendance, over - 70,000 crowding the Sydney cricket ground-. The police ordered the gates 'to be closed and thousands outside were unable to eee the match. Play was strenuous and exciting throughout and though England, won the Australians had the visitors oil the defensive many times, especially in the first spell, when Weissel lost two tries through sheer hard luck. Ellaby and Atkinson ecored for England, in the first spell, Sullivan converting one try, while Weissel kicked three penalty goals for Australia. The half-time score was thus 8 to 6. The second spell saw a hard bollocking game all the way. The Australians again pressed hard, and in the latter stages Weissel again had ill-fortune, the ball beating him on the bounce when he had a chance of scoring right in front of the English goal. Just on time Sullivan had a shot from a penalty, but the ball went wide and the gams ended with the scores unchanged. The game was'characterised by dour defence with great ■ tackling, but the better side won. Australia received the lion’s share of the penalties. Ellaby was. the star performer, being largely instrumental in securing England’s two tries, while Weissel for Australia was the most prominent.
