WHOLE HERD TESTED

“HATCLIFFE” genuine dispersal

BUYERS MUST BE INTERESTED.

“Buy at Hatcliffe and know what you are buying.” This is the slogan adopted for the dispersal sale of Mr. 11. J. Kaye’s “Hatcliffe” Jersey fctud, one of the most important of the series of Jersey sales to be held in Taranaki this winter. In accordance with the excellent advice embodied in his slogan, Mr. Kaye has “proved his goods,” and there is not a single female of testing age in the catalogue of 58 offerings but will be sold, accompanied by the latest information regarding her production ability. Buyers should bear in mind that every cow in the herd has been tested repeatedly for the past six years. Last season the herd as a whole averaged 3061 b of butterfat for 288 days, including nine two-year-olds and that was on rough hilly country. Moreover, although not extensively shown, every time a “Hatcliffe” animal has been exhibited it has won a prize. The K.C.B. strain is predominant in the herd, being strongly represented by a remarkably successful sire Holly Oak Bossie, line bred to K.C.B. through Grannie’s Knight C. 8.8., Southern Prince, Lady Ivy C.O.R. (7361 b fat). He also combines the blood of Lady Superior, 2nd class C.O.R. (997 fat), Miss Ivy C.O.R. (727 fat), Majesty’s ■Eileen, C.O.R. (606 fat) and Viola's Golden Laddie C. 8.8. The very choicest and most thoroughly proved dairy strains will be found in the “Hatcliffe” herd. About, seven years ago, Mr. Kaye, president of the Stratford Jersey Cattle Club, sold all his grades and went fully into pedigrees, the idea being to force himself to cull, as his own heifers were put into the herd. He commenced testing straight away on the whole herd, and anything not up to standard was sold, not as a pedigree, but as a grade. In culling on type, Mr. Kaye paid especial attention to udder development, and of the-50 cows now milking not one has a rough, pendulous or ill-shaped vessel. n ■ Six mature cows tested under C.O.R. conditions last season averaged 501.68 lb of butterfat in 305 days, and nearly all calved within 12 months, while a couple of two-year-olds averaged 386.24 fat in 312 days. Of those tested C.O.R. this year, Rose of Picardy up to the end of April had done 417.39 lb of butterfat in 265 days, and is due to calve at the end of August Buyers who attend this sale and see the class of .country farmed by Mr. Kaye will appreciate the wonderful success achieved by “Hatcliffe” cows which have gone, in the past on to better record making country. . Obvious reasons have guided Mr. Kaye in arranging this dispersal sale. He has now about 50 heifers representin" the result of careful mating. He does not wish to part with them, but, as something has- to go, he is reluctantly compelled to sell the herd, and has frankly disclosed in the catalogue each cow’s record, whether it be good or bad. These records, taken in conjunction with the pedigree, make a splendid guide to intending buyers, who are asked to bear in mind the essential fact that the vendor has been working to get together a whole herd of good cows with, no failures.* He preferred, this plan to that of concentrating on individual high.Acords, and has confidence that the result of the sale will justify his methods. A dozen or more of the mature cows could be drafted, and probably no two judges would agree which was the pick. AU°the Cloverlea cows purchased at the disperal of Mr. Dan Malone’s great herd are particularly good, and their breeding is well known. The four daughters of that splendid championship bull Cloverlea Conclusion are outstanding. Three of them at “Hatcliffe” averaged 5201 b of butterfat in 305' days, and it has to be remembered that the great bull Waipiko Leonard also figures prominently in the Cloverlea families. Then the Greendale family Farce, Marmion and Girl, will undoubtedly attract attention, particularly Marmion, a dairy cow all over. She has topped the O.H.T. cows this season. This is the family which produced Ashton Olive’s Pet, the sensational two-year-old with 7371 b fat. The catalogue is far too numerous for individualising, but probably the daughters of Holly Oak Bobby will compete for favour with the best of the older cows, for there « something about them that immediately takes the eye and satisfies the ideal. His four daughters under test this season would, as a team, be hard to beat anywhere in New Zealand. Pin that information in your hat, Mr. Prospective Buyer, and ask yourself what they will be like at maturity, for it is a well known fact that this strain improves The young bulls are a feature of the •catalogue. Well grown of splendid type, and possessing great constitution, they have only to be seen to secure admirers. Both sire and dam will be there, and the whole life’s milking history of the dam will be available. Thus » very thorough estimation of their worth can bo made. Mr. Kaye’s sale offers a wonderful 'opportunity to breeders and young dairymen. It will be held this Friday at the “Hatcliffe” stud farm, and catalogues may be obtained from anj branch of the Farmers’ Co-operative oi Wright Stephenson _ and Co. Etd. Luncheon will be provided.
