HUA BROOK STUD
VALUABLE SIRES FROM AMERICA. BOTH PRODUCTION AND TYPE. Situated at Bell Block, on the main New Plymouth-Auckland highway, there is probably no better known stud farm in the Dominion than that of Mr. Harry Salway, of Hua Brook, Bell Block, it has a wealth of well selected, high quality, imported blood, judiciously introduced into strains already noted for their high class production and outstanding type. Mr. Harry Salway has been breeding Jerseys for many years, but perhaps it was that great cow Majesty’s Eileen, a show winner with a record of GOulb of fat, that first brought the Hua Brook stud really into prominence. Majesty’s Eileen was by Majesty's Fox—-■ Eileen’s Maid 2nd. Her daughter Eileen’s Treasure, by Beaehlands Commander, added further honours by winning the championship at Stratford and also producing 5791 b fat as a two-year-old. From Majesty's Eileen Mr. Salway bred the noted bull Majesty’s Squire (by Holly Bank-Squire) and used that/bull extensively in his herd. Following after that bull he used a son of his, Fairy’s Noble Boy, out of Fairy’s Fury, a cow by Doctor Fury with two c.o.r, daughters. Those were the principal blood lines that he worked on.
Realising- the necessity of introducing the best outside blood into his herd Mr. Salway paid 1000 guineas for Victor’s Handsome Prince, which had been Imported from Cooper and Sons’ herd, America. He has since proved one of the greatest breeding bulls that New Zealand has_exer had, not only from the show ring performances and dairy ability of his daughters, but also from his own performances in the show ring. It was certainly wonderful to secure a bull that was at the same time a champion sucn as ho is, and also had transmitted his quality to his stock. He won the Sires Produce Stakes, and this year three ot his daughters scored highest honours as Hawera, Stratford and New Plymouth in keenly contested classes for three females by the one sire. A step further was the purchase of another valuable imported bull from America in Mourier-s Oxford Noble, brought to mate with the daughters of Victor’s Handsome Prince. Actually Mourier’s Oxford Noble left his first lot of calves in America at one oi its most noted studs, “Twin Oaks.’ A number of the bulls of that batch went into leading studs in America, and the females also showed such . wonderful promise, both in the show ring and in production, that Mourier’s Oxford Noble became quite famous in America. Various attempts have been made to repurchase him for shipment back to America, but Mr. Salway is so pleased with his progeny that he has resisted all tempting offers. . .The stud is handy to town, and visitors desirous of inspecting the herd are always welcome. Mr. Salway has a number of young bulls by Victor’s Handsome Prince and Mourier’s Oxford Noble. They are bulls of outstanding quality that would improve the blood of any herd. A tribute to Mr. Salway’s judgment was given recently by an Australian breeder who after touring the Dominion and visiting quite a number of studs selected a heifer by Victor's Handsome Prince.
